Editorial Review:
Long may he run, sure, but Young and friends sound like they're in dire need of a creative refuel on this ho-hum live set. The man's clearly coasting. He knocked off the Broken Arrow studio disc without a second thought, and here the tapes roll for 83 minutes in capturing an OK performance (highlight: "Slipaway," the labyrinthine disc-two opener) that is effectively nothing more than an officially sanctioned bootleg. Let's hope he either gets inspired enough to deliver a Sleeps with Angels-style opus or finally wraps work on what should an awesome archival retrospective. --Jeff Bateman
Year of the Horse Reviews:
Mmmmmmmm!
2008-10-27 - This is my favorite live Neil, minus the elusive "Time Fades Away," and the live in Dublin acoustic DVD that accompanied my copy of "Greendale." Don;t get we wrong ; I love all live Neil.
On this album, Neil and the Horse have been accused of sounding tired. I say they sound epic, full and fat. On the other hand, this album bosa the hottest "Sedan Delivery ever, so they are anything but slow, even though the album as a whole has a slower tempo. Neil and the band aschew a nervous, competitive agenda in favor of a relaxed bigness that bursts like savory fireworks in your chest.
Then, we could focus on the song selection, an unusual group of songs culled from Neil (and sometime Crazy Horse) albums aver the years, including "Life,--a Neil and Crazy Horse album from the 80s probably best listened to only occasionally. The treatment here makes it clear that while Neil occasionally makes a less-than-ultimate album, this has nothing to do with how his material can present live: glorious, full, transcendent, generously large. As other reviewers have mentioned, the "Danger Bird" here is a perfomance for the ages, gloriously enlarged into the candy-like bursting animal it is meant to be. Studio Neil and Crazy Horse have their moments, but live, they fill your heart and soul with the psychedelic heaviness of rumbling mountain thunder. Baritone candy.
Solid live album
2008-08-28 - I agree with what seems to be the consensus about this album. It isn't a great-sounding album, but it's OK soundwise (it's a "garage band," after all). It's not greatly inspired, on the whole, but it has its fine moments, and it's a solid performance throughout, with good songs, that I enjoy. I think most fans will enjoy it.
Cuts of particular interest to me include a soulful performance of "When Your Lonely Heart Breaks." It puts Young's voice to more of a test than the other songs, and leaves it out there in front where you can really hear it.
The harmonies on a laid back "Human Highway" come off very well. "Scattered" is mellowed from its version on Broken Arrow, giving an enjoyable alternative view of it.
The guitar work gets more edgy and unusual starting with "Danger Bird," which is quite a moving performance. "Prisoners of Rock 'n' Roll" and "Sedan Delivery" have an effective punkish energy. (The CD booklet shows Young and the band's mug shots.)
The acoustic version of "Mr. Soul" seems a little square to me. The electric version of "Pocahontas" works well.
The other cuts are good too, if not always highly distinctive.

Simply fantastic
2006-02-18 - I'm drinking beer and listening to Neil Young on Rhapsody, looking for stuff I've never heard, and holy cow, this album is fantastic. I have a very good stereo system, and I'm playing it loud, and I can't believe how good Mr. Soul, Barstool Blues, When you Dance sound. I'm jumping around the album and that's all I've heard so far, but anyone who thinks this is ho hum or anything less than amazing is an idiot. This is a genius at his best. This is brilliant.
Not the best live one but not bad either.....
2005-02-14 - I've not listend to this in quite some time and decided I needed a charge. This was Neil and Crazy Horse doing long jams to some really good songs. I love the long, drawn out version of Danger Bird. Slip Away was another cool tune. I guess what I like the best about this is that he chose some songs that have not been recorded live before. I feel the version of When You Dance and Mr. Soul are simply fantastic. This disc may not be as good as some of his other live ones, but it's not to shabby either. Worth a listen folks......
great set, bad sound
2004-04-20 - I am a big Neil Young fan and think that this is a great set list, but the sound quality is just not there. It sounds like it was recorded from a mic in the audience rather than from a mix (was it mixed?).
