  • Editorial Review:
Academy-award winning director Jonathan Demme beautifully captures Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legend, Neil Young as he prepares and presents the performance of a lifetime with the help of his wife Peggi and friends country star Emmylou Harris, steel guitarist Ben Keith and more at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry.

Description of Neil Young - Heart of Gold:
"I just want to play well, share the stage with my friends, give the best I can," says Neil Young before the concert that is the centerpiece of Heart of Gold. No problem, dude. Working with filmmaker Jonathan Demme, Young has come up with a gem--not all flash and bling-bling, but as understated as a single pearl, musically restrained yet emotionally open. Of course, neither Demme (an Oscar winner for The Silence of the Lambs; he also helmed Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense) nor Young would call it "a concert film"; the director describes it as "a dream concert, something that's literally being dreamt by Neil," while the singer-songwriter himself calls it "a multi-level story." Whatever, the project came together in 2005, as Young was finishing his Prairie Wind album (the latest in a string of lovely, country-flavored acoustic recordings dating back to 1972's Harvest) and preparing to debut the music at Nashville's fabled Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry. The fact that Young had also recently experienced a brain aneurysm might or might not have influenced his decision to film the show, but it certainly seems to have had an effect on the music. He and his band (which, with the addition of horns, strings, and backup singers, including Emmylou Harris, occasionally numbers forty or more musicians) perform Prairie Wind in its entirety, and there is some deeply moving, highly personal material here; in addition to the gospel-tinged "When God Made Me" and the dirge-like "No Wonder," Young sings about his recently-deceased father (the title song), his newly adult daughter ("Here for You"), the guitar he plays that once belonged to Hank Williams ("This Old Guitar"), and even his dog ("He Was the King"). Demme's direction is ideal for conveying the music's restrained acoustic textures, rich backing vocals, and simple, elegant melodies. Shots are held much longer than is usual in such films, and while there are lots of close-ups, there are no gimmicks. This superb DVD package is filled out by a second disc of bonus features, including a variety of featurettes and a solo performance of "The Needle and the Damage Done" from The Johnny Cash Show in 1971. --Sam Graham

Neil Young - Heart of Gold Reviews:
Heart of Gold 5 Star Review
2008-09-29 - We have a the movie premiere poster hanging in our bedroom, for some bizarre reason, my husband did not have this dvd in all of his musical collections - another Neil Young masterpiece.

The Best Music, Best Performance, Best Ensemble, THE BEST 5 Star Review
2008-08-31 - I love music and I love to watch and listen to musicians who live & breath music and love doing it. Neil Young's music is timeless and he just gets better with age. This concert DVD is proof of that. You have a front row, center stage experience without feeling the producers are force feeding you the concert. It is the most tastefully directed concert DVD that I've seen. You're there quietly listening, seeing, experiencing a rare musical moment. Simply wonderful.

A religious experience for Neil Young fans... 5 Star Review
2008-08-28 - I've watched this production several times, and shared with many friends, and it just gets better and better. The performances of Heart of Gold and Old Man are beautiful beyond description.

    Thank you Neil.

Neil's Still Got IT! 5 Star Review
2008-08-13 - Many performers, as they age, just do not sound as good as they did in their younger days. Neil Young proves in this performance that, like good wine, some things get better with time. In my younger days, I really did'nt appreciate his talent. As I have grown and experienced life, I can truly say that Neil's words, voice and musicianship are so incredibly pure and heartfelt. This man is practically a God of music. If you don't love this DVD, you must have wiped too many brain cells.

Outstanding in Every Way- Perfect - A Classic 5 Star Review
2008-07-16 - I don't know how a DVD concert could be presented any better than this one. Neil Young is still at the top of his game. The new material presented here blends perfectly with the older songs in style and quality. His writing is unique and poetic and his voice is as mystical as ever. He has mellowed well and sings to those of his generation of experiences we can associate with. The performance is brilliant and moving. The sound is perfect. I had chills running down my spine.

Technically speaking, this dvd could be a "how to" guide for film students. The direction, camera work, editing, staging, auditorium, recording, musicians, interviews, ambience, et all, are perfect. It appears that every aspect of this production was well conceived and well rehearsed. Emmylou Harris and the Memphis Horns were two of several special touches added to some of the performances.

If you are an Eagles fan, I would give this a slight edge over the Farewell Tour DVD and that is saying a lot for me. Some talented people found a spot where all the stars aligned this night and really nailed it.

    P. S.
I like the sound better in stereo instead of 5.1. Try it and see what you think.
