Editorial Review:
THE STORY ABOUT THREE FRIENDS GROWING UP IN A SOUTH CENTRAL LOS ANGELES NEIGHBORHOOD, AND OF STREET LIFE WHERE FRIENDSHIP, PAIN, DANGER AND LOVE COMBINE TO FORM REALITY. 'THE HOOD' IS A PLACE WHERE DRIVE-BY SHOOTINGS AND UNEMPLOYMENT ARE RAMPANT. BUT IT IS ALSO A PLACE WHERE HARMONY CO-EXISTS WITH ADVERSITY.
Description of Boyz 'N the Hood:
John Singleton, at the age of 23, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut film, Boyz N the Hood. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Angela Basset, Ice Cube, and Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first starring role in a feature film. Gooding plays Tre Styles, a teenager growing up in South Central Los Angeles. His father, Furious (Fishburne), is divorced and living away from Tre and his mother (Basset), but he's still involved in Tre's upbringing, teaching him the values of right and wrong and responsibility. Meanwhile, Tre's childhood buddies Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) are living their lives in terms of the epidemic of violence and poverty that has plagued their neighborhood. Ricky, a talented football player, strives to get a full athletic scholarship to college. If only his SAT scores were higher. Doughboy lives a life full of crime but still remains true to his friends. The obstacles that these three young men come across result in dire consequences, devastatingly avoidable and inevitable at the same time. Boyz N the Hood is a landmark film beyond its commercial success, presenting a portrait of South Central in the late '80s and early '90s as painted by Singleton (who grew up in that neighborhood), achieving accuracy and dramatic resonance in this story of at-risk youth. --Shannon Gee
Boyz 'N the Hood Reviews:
Boys N The Hood - Excellent

Where's that mall?
2009-08-06 - I never saw this when it first came out. But when I got it on DVD and watched it it was great. I can already see where the makers of GTA San Andreas got their ideas from when making the game. The only question, I would like to know if that mall parking lot where Ice Cube and his two homies kill the three guys who killed his brother Ricky is the same place where the first back to the future movie was filmed at the part where Doc brown gets shot by some terrorists in a van and Marty goes back in time to 1955, because everytime I see that part they both look like they take place in the same area.
Boyz N The Hood
2009-08-04 - This is a movie about a group of friends growing up in South Central LA. All of them have different goals in life and a few of them want to make something of themselves. In the end, one of them loses to the fate of a gun and loses it all.
Well told story that still rings true today
2009-05-18 - Believe it or not, I had never seen this movie before! Starring the always reliable Larry Fishburne and a very young Cuba Gooding Jr. Simple tale of a young man growing up in South Central LA, with his dad trying to keep him out of trouble by teaching him life lessons, while the young man gets pulled closer to a life of crime by his friends, who don't have the same potential or options in life as him. Well told, moving story that still rings true today.
awesome movie
2009-05-15 - I saw this movie when it came out! I loved it and was scared of it at the same time. It was soo raw & gritty about a lifestyle I knew nothing about. All these years later it has only gotten better with age. And I really loved the behind the scenes interviews.
