Description of Nickel Creek:
San Diego is not exactly known as a hotbed of contemporary bluegrass music, but then again, Nickel Creek are a far cry from most bluegrass bands you've ever heard. On their Alison Krauss-produced debut, they serve up a lilting, ethereal fusion of bluegrass, Celtic, modern folk, and even classical influences, offering exquisite harmonies that would be more at home at a Crosby, Stills & Nash tribute than at a musical salute to the late Bill Monroe. Yet it makes for delightful listening, all the same. The three principals (Sara Watkins on fiddle and vocals; her brother Sean Watkins on guitar, mandolin, and vocals; and Chris Thile on mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, and vocals) are either barely out of their teens or still in them. Individually and as a band, they've already won a slew of awards and notoriety on their respective instruments. The three prodigies (joined by Thile's dad, Scott, on bass) really strut their eclectic hot licks on a few soaring, skittering instrumentals, but even more impressive are Nickel Creek's graceful, heartfelt harmonies on the many lovely ballads. Hot licks, when you get right down to it, are a dime a dozen; this sort of pluperfect tunefulness is a much rarer thing. --Bob Allen

Nickel Creek Reviews:
One listen and I was a fan 5 Star Review
2009-07-05 - The first Nickel Creek song that I heard was Sweet Afton. I love Robert Burns poetry and recognized the lyrics so they had to do a good job on this one or I'd have been turned off. They didn't disappoint. I bought the album and enjoy every song. My new favorite is The Lighthouse Tale - you'll have to be hard-hearted to avoid getting choked up listening to this song.

This album was produced by Alison Krauss. It was nominated for two grammy awards and received several other awards.

Flawless! 5 Star Review
2008-08-31 - I'm a country girl, and have grown up with Bluegrass, but I'm not crazy about much of the genre's artists. But these kids are amazing. The virtuosic playing between vocal tracks is thrilling and makes you want to get up and dance around the room! And then the vocal tracks bring something brand new. It's not bluegrass, it's not even country. It's just good contemporary harmonies, great songwriting, and something the listener can relate to.

If you like country, get this album. If you like bluegrass, DEFINITELY get this album. If you like folk, get this album. If you like acoustic rock, get this album. If you like new, refreshing music, get this album.

A must have, even if you are not a bluegrass fan 5 Star Review
2008-05-08 - I first heard Nickel Creek on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion Radio show. I was hooked. The music just speaks to you, even if you are not normally a fan of bluegrass. In fact, I hesitate to classify the music as bluegrass because it is so much more than that being both modern and even incorporating touches that feel Celtic. The music is innovative and fresh, and I especially enjoy Sara Watkin's vocals. Her voice is melodic and so refreshingly honest. I especially like her in "Reasons Why." This is a CD you will listen to again and again.

Stunning 5 Star Review
2008-02-12 - After my introduction to this band, I learned of a concert 300 miles away. I had to witness these souls in person. Absolutely a fantastic addition to your music collection.

amazing! 5 Star Review
2007-12-20 - this album is the best album by one of the best bands out there. yes its bluegrass based, but the music in here is so good that bluegrass lovers and haters can both enjoy it if they would just get over the absolutes. talent and musical genius are all over this album.

thile is the best young mandolinists out there sean not only knows how to play guitar, but fills in so well that you hardly realize he's there, until you really listen, and then he's all over the record. and sara. the lord has blessed her hands on the fiddle and her melodies and harmonies ring loud. who needs 5 people in a band. forget two electric guitars and a bass drums a singer and a DJ.. lets get on to the real stuff. mandolin, fiddle, and guitar. simplicity at its finest, composed into complex rhythms and melodies. amazing alibum.
