Description of Bewitched [UMD for PSP]:
As one of many in the ongoing trend of resurrecting old TV shows and turning them into contemporary Hollywood product, Bewitched tries awfully hard to distinguish itself. It succeeds in lots of surprising ways, not least of which is the star power brought by Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. Even if they don't create the kind of romantic chemistry that would have elevated the already high concept, they act as delightful foils to each other, but more often to themselves. The conceit of this Bewitched is that it's a self-reflexive look at the entertainment business, with Ferrell playing Jack Wyatt, an actor starring in an updated version of the classic TV show. Out of favor with the Hollywood elite and desperately in need of a hit, he insists on an unknown to play Samantha, as he wants the show to be about him, since if something doesn't come his way soon, he's going to be hearing a lot of no's, despite the yes-men surrounding him. While his agent (Jason Schwartzman in hilarious high Hollywood sleaze mode) gets him the "unknown Samantha" deal, it's Jack himself who discovers his own leading lady in the delightful figure of Isabel Bigalow (Kidman), who possesses just the right nose wiggle, not to mention other wiggles.

But wouldn't you know it, Isabel really is a witch, and exactly the kind of "good" witch trying to rely less on her magical powers that Samantha Stevens was back in her "real" world. Instead of a cranky mother like Endora, Isabel has a distinguished father, Nigel (Michael Caine) who lurks around her as a constant reminder that she can't be who she's not (a mere mortal), and she certainly can't be the star of some zany TV show. As the plot thickens and the movie's reflexivity grows more convoluted, Nigel falls for the non-witch actress who plays Endora (Shirley MacLaine), and Jack and Isabel fall for each other. Here's where the Ferrell/Kidman gel doesn’t quite become aspic, but her perkiness (I mean, come on, it is Nicole Kidman, for crying out loud) and his goofiness (Ferrell is at his peak of intelligent bumbling) are more than enough to make the entirety of the proceedings a delectable trifle. Director Nora Ephron has fun skewering her own business in the script she co-wrote with her sister Delia, and her eye for quality craft makes everything sparkle as it should. Even if we have yet to see the definitive remake of an old TV show on the big screen, at least Bewitched is well more than run-of-the-mill as so many adaptations have been, and so many will be. --Ted Fry

    Bewitched [UMD for PSP] Reviews:
Extremeley Funny And Lovable!!! 5 Star Review
2008-09-09 - Even though it's not reall like the classic tv series, it's still a pretty good movie. It's actually very funny! But, if you are a hard-core fan of the original 'Bewitched' tv show, you may be disappointed. It's more about a real witch named Isabel Bigelow being asked by a snobby mortal actor named Jack Wyatt to play Samantha in a tv remake of Bewitched. She finds out that he's just using her to stand in so that he can be the main star of the show as Darrin. Even though Isabel tries to stop casting spells, she still casts a few to take her revenge against Jack. If you love comedy, the tv series, Nichole Kidman, and Will Ferrell, you'll love BEWITCHED!!!

Its like a 1940's love story with more magic and twists 5 Star Review
2008-07-31 - I won't go into plot points since other reviews have covered that. But if you were expecting the original bewitched you might be disappointed because the old one was all about(Samantha) where this one is more split evenly between the couple as well as the supporting cast. The love story between Kidman and Ferrell reminded me of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, "Bringing Up Baby, Holiday. Sure its a bit silly, unbelievable, and there are some jokes for jokes sake but its the innocence of it all that makes it so bewitching :)I felt good after watching this movie in a way that reminds me of the old love stories. On top of loving the story, Kidman's performance was amazing. How she so subtly changes her voice to fit the role and expressions I have never seen from her before. It was a real pleasure. Ferrell was also enjoyable for me because the strength of Kidman's character really complimented his goofiness. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Not worth my time 2 Star Review
2008-07-25 - I was bored and tired one evening and found myself watching most of this movie. It was terrible. Whoever thought casting Will Ferrell as a romantic lead was a good idea needs to have their head checked. He's funny (sometimes), but he's not a romantic guy. Nicole Kidman has potential at least. I would not recommend this unless you find yourself with absolutely nothing else to do.

Calling Mystery Science Theater 3000! 2 Star Review
2008-04-18 - I agree with the reviewer that said the only way to watch this movie again would be if it were given the MST3K treatment.Joel and Mike and the bots were pros at turning a lemon into lemonade. This movie fails on several levels, as romantic comedy, fantasy, or even as tribute to the original series. Worst of all is the Norah Ephron script. Nicole Kidman as the witch Isabel is a ditz who speaks in a Marilyn Monroe, 'happy birthday Mr. president' cadence. Why she desires to live a normal human life isn't explained. Her fascination and awe with simple every day mortal things like turning on a lawn sprinkler or opening a can of soda seems bizarre, as she has no problems using a credit card or driving a car. She has no chemistry with her costar Will Ferrell who's poor performance is also partly the fault of the poorly written script. Did Nora Ephron even like the original series?

Color me Bewitched, Bewildered, and BEMUSED!!! 5 Star Review
2008-03-24 - Oh, my gosh this movie is a laugh riot with a capital L! I wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars, because it's even better than perfect. If you need to smile because you've been sick or work has been hard or whatever, my prescription is to take two Bewitcheds and call me in the morning. Because laughter and antiobiotics are the best medicines.

If you're unfamiliar with the plot of this movie, it's like those shows from the 60s ("I Dream of Jeannie" and "Bewitched"), where a guy was married to a magical genie, and the poor guy had to deal with his mother-in-law, and constant other fantastical situations. Will Ferrell is like a classic film clown, and he kind of plays it straight while Nicole Kidman ("Days of Thunder") gets to twinkle her nose and get them further and further into trouble!

There is a reason this movie is considered an instant classic. It's so well done, and colorful!! The script is razor-sharp, although I do not think it stay true to real-life witchcraft. Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman are like a modern day Lucy-and-Ethel and this movie will insist on making you happy in a very forceful manner.

    It's bewitching!
