Radiant Decay: A Tribute to Nine Inch Nails Reviews:
It's Actually Pretty Good
2004-10-29 - I've seen many bad reviews for this album, so I figured I might as well do a good one to help balance it out. Despite the fact that I'd only heard of one of the artists before I got this, most of the songs are pretty well done. There are a few bad ones, but even they have potential. I do prefer the original versions(except for Down In It), but it's not like I was expecting them to do better versions than Trent.
Here's a track by track review:
1. Closer by Transient 4/5
This cover is pretty close to the original, but sung by a female singer. I like how you can actually hear the bridge (the part that goes, "Beneath the forest, above the trees, ect.").
2. Piggy by Alex Xenophon 4/5
Initially I didn't care for this one, but after a few more listens it's grown on me. It's quite a bit different from the original. It has the same feel, but a bit darker. Another reviewer said the singing sucked, but I though it was fine.
3. Wish by Broke Box 4/5
This one is pretty cool. It's got a neat distorted guitar and some cool distorted backing vocals. Lead vocals could be better, though.
4. Sanctified by Transient 4/5
Like Transient's other cover. It doesn't stray far from the original, but it's still pretty good. It's a bit odd to listen to a woman singing about a woman, though.
5. Mr. Self Destruct by T.H.C. 2/5
This is one of the few that's not very good. The samples and vocals are horrible. There is a decent guitar, but it can't save this mix. I would only give this a 1/5, but there's a cool piano part in the middle of the almost random noise. You should listen to this at least once, even if you have to fast forward through the garbage.
6. Sin by Tin Electric 5/5
This is about as good as the original. I imagine that if Trent were to record this song today that it would end up sounding like this. Not too much different from the original, but it has more guitar in it. It's pretty similar to the live version on Halo 17, in that regard.
7. Last by Transparent 4/5
Doesn't stray too far from the original, but this is my favorite NIN song, so I don't mind. Not much else to say about it.
8. Suck by Etherphoria 3/5
This sounds nothing like the original, and it's nowhere near as good. Seems like Etherphoria needed lyrics for a song, and decided Suck would work. Musically, it's typical Techno stuff that you would expect to appear on some mediocre movie. It's not horrible, but the only thing it has in common is the lyrics.
9. Down In It by Sascha 5/5
Even though Down In It's my least favorite NIN song, I was predisposed to like this because it's done by Sascha of KMFDM, which is one of my favorite bands. It has the same feel as the original, but unlike most of these songs, it is different. As one reviewer stated, Sascha sings the vocals, which sort of suprises me as most of his vocals are shouted or spoken. Good stuff.
10. Something I Can Never Have by George Sarah and Lara Peterson 2/5
I hate to give this a bad score, because George has done a competent job with the music. However, the vocals are horrible. It sounds like a little girl is singing. Plus the lyrics get mangled for no good reason. To her credit her vocals are haunting, even if they are annoying. Good music, but the singing is just plain bad, and considering the vocals were what made the original so great, nothing can save it. I'd skip it.
11. Hurt by Tin Electric 4/5
These are the same guys who did the awesome Sin cover. This one isn't as good, but it's a neat take on Hurt. It's much more aggressive than the original, but you can still hear the melody. Fans of the original version might not like it, but you should still check it out. Ending sucks though.
Get this if you're a fan of NIN and have all of the official releases. These don't surpass the originals, but other than a few bad ones, these are well done.
...A tribute cd that's actually good!
2004-01-22 - OK, so a tribute cd might not appeal to you, as so many of them are typically known to be horrible.
But I gotta say, or type rather, that this one is the best one I've ever heard.
Ok, you put the cd in your cd player, first thing you should do is skip the first track, which is Transient's not-so-great cover of "Closer."
The second track, Alex Xenophon's "Piggy" starts off with a nice bass sample and evolves into a great sounding track....however, this guy's voice sucks so bad you'll probably skip it. His singing is terrible, ruining the lyrics, but I gotta give him credit for the background song. He is a great producer and musician but Simon Cowell would have a field day bashing him if he were to appear on American Idol.
The third track, "Wish" by Broke Box, starts out great, with a great distortion guitar sample, I love it. But after it...the song sucks (...). His singing sounds like Weird Al Yankovic, and that's not a good thing in the world of Nine Inch Nails music.
The fourth track, however, really starts this compilation album off! It is fantastic. It's a cover of Sanctified by Transient, the ones who screwed up Closer, but this mix is brilliant. I love the music not to mention the lead singer woman's voice. Heheh, she singing to a girl and she is one, you know what that means. But the minute you start this track you'll find it is brilliant, perfect, and not to upset any NIN fans, but its 100x better than even Trent's version, no offense to him at all either :P.
The fifth track is an idm/experimental mix of "Mr Self Destruct" by T.H.C. It is ill. The programming is unique, the computer's voice is aight, the distortion guitars fit perfectly, but the piano part in the middle really defines this superb mix.
The sixth is by Tin Electric, and they make a rock cover of "Sin"...but for the first time I gotta say this rock remix is pretty damn tight. The guy's voice is ill, the music's fantastic, its great.
Skip the seventh, its not worth it. Really.
The eighth, oh hell yeah. The cover of "Suck" by Etherporia, is another gem. I can't even describe it, it's almost as if it's a song of its own. I give props to the guys (or guy) behind made this one.
Skip the ninth, its bad. I think it's Sacha (however you spell it) from KMFDM, but please. Down in it is supposed to sound like it is, don't change such a great song. This sascha guy is singing the lyrics as opposed to rapping them, and that's just stupid.
The tenth is a masterpiece. "Something I Can Never Have" like you've never heard it before. I love the singer's voice. You get goosebumps when she sings "you make this allllll, go, away," for real.
And the last track...uhh just turn the cd off after track 10, it'll be doing you a favor.
All in all (or whatever) this tribute album got some great stuff on it, for real, I'm not even playing. Most of the songs on here are worth hearing, the others...suck.
I just had to say...
2001-06-26 - I liked some of the tracks, and appreciated some of the programming. Some of it was cool. Some of it .... I sang on the album. "something I can never have" was an appropriate soundtrack for a horrible break up that I was going through at the time. It was ironic becuase I didn't pick the song, it was picked for me. It meant alot to me, and I hope some of you enjoy it.
not a highly recommended cd
2000-10-19 - Quite simply put...I bought the cd...I played the cd...I put the cd up for sale...no one will buy it.
Overall I must say that this is a pretty bad tribute cd. I mean I give all the artists credit for trying, but that is about it. I personally liked only one of the tracks on the disc. Your taste may differ--but I urge anyone to listen to the sound samples before they buy. The music is less intense and much slower then the original songs. It sounds more like a club/techno/70's porno music cd. However, it is interesting to see how the different artists manipulate the songs, lyrics, and music. For any hard core Nine Inch Nails fan this is a piece to have in your collection, even though you may never want to listen to it!!
Different
2000-10-18 - I like these versions of the NIN originals..they are supposed to be different and thats what i like about it...I actually like the remix of "Hurt" MUCH BETTER than the original cuz they speeded it up and made it more intense, the singer David Scott does a great job with this song.
