Like Owen Wilson himself, Drillbit Taylor has a loose, shaggy-dog appeal. Wilson plays a homeless ex-soldier who wants to emigrate illegally to Canada--and when three misfit high-school students hire him to protect them from bullies, he sets out to fleece them for the money he needs to get away. Naturally, this being a formulaic crowd-pleaser, he bonds with the kids and discovers that maybe his life isn't so worthless after all. Fortunately for moviegoers, the creators of Drillbit Taylor (including co-writer Seth Rogen, star of Knocked Up) have the wit to tweak the formula and give what could have been prefabricated and bland some grit, surprises, and genuine laughs (as well as an allusion to this movie's obvious inspiration, the 1980 teen-movie classic My Bodyguard). While nowhere near as funny (or as rude) as Rogen's previous co-writing effort, the dorkily sublime Superbad, Drillbit Taylor benefits from a similar grasp of the genuine cravings and frustrations of adolescence. Still, it's Wilson's movie, and his slacker-romantic rhythm gives the hmor its swing. Also featuring Leslie Mann (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), who is woefully underutilized as Wilson's love interest. One sneaky bit of casting: The main bully is played by Alex Frost, who played an unhappy teen driven to shoot up his school in director Gus Van Sant's Elephant. --Bret Fetzer

Funny Movie
2009-09-24 - Three geeky freshmen students face lots of troubles from 2 high school bullies. They are placed in the lockers, beaten up, humiliated, and laughed at all the time. In order to survive high school and save all this humiliation, they decide to hire a body guard. They met many candidates (one of the candidates is Chuck Liddell by the way), however they decide eventually to hire Drillbit Taylor. Now Drillbit Taylor told them he is an ex-miliatry fighter, but in reality he is only a street begger looking to make some extra money.

Nice movie with some funny scenes. The funniest scenes are the ones where the students were bullied around. The craziest things were done to them.

This movie kinda reminded me of the high school I went to. We didn't have nasty bullies like the ones in this movie, however we had some bullies that needed some butt wooping in order to behave well. I believe that if you stand up for yourself in High School and manage to earn others' respect, you will be able to do the same thing in the rest of your life.


Entertaining
2009-08-20 - This movie didn't earn 5 stars, but it's not such a bad movie. There's lots of funny parts, such as the bodyguard recruiting sequence (I laughed at the Tiger) as well as the scene where the bully is sitting there in front of everyone and still acts all sweet and charming and makes everyone go 'aww'. He bears a strong resemblance to young Hannibal Lecter and doubtless the similarities in physical appearance was intentional.

Seeing Josh (Drake and Josh) as the bully's friend/partner was a surprise and a nice treat. Josh certainly has changed from the plump, dorkishly cute kid he used to be on Nickelodeon, and he played a good role as the other bully. Owen Wilson was amusing in his role as bum and then substitute teacher, and Lisa Lampanelli's cameo was hilarious, especially when she scolded her son for calling Owen a bum when before she had been making dirty jokes to said bum. All in all, a decent movie, 3.75/5 stars.

"Drillbit Taylor" is little more than a watered-down version of "Superbad" - not really a surprise since one of its writers, Seth Rogan, also had a hand in crafting that earlier, much more sophisticated work. Yet, ironically, Rogan may actually have become a victim of his own success, for, since its release in 2007, "Superbad" has become the gold standard against which all subsequent revenge-of-the-nerds comic fantasies must now be measured - and "Drillbit Taylor" falls far short of the mark.

Nate Hartley, Troy Gentile and David Dorfman play a trio of 9th graders so terminally nerdy that they make the geeks in "Superbad" look like letter-wearing party animals in comparison. After suffering endless humiliations at the hands of the school's uber bully (Alex Frost) and his simpleton sidekick (Josh Peck), the boys decide it's time to hire a professional bodyguard to teach the jerks a lesson. They alight on one Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson), a homeless ne'er-do-well who signs on for the assignment for a nominal fee - or so the boys think.

Far more dunderheaded than it is satirical, "Drillbit Taylor" boasts a few good laughs that don't quite compensate for the movie's predictable storyline or its frequent lapses into "feel-good" sentimentality. However, the performers are generally likable, and at least the hordes of extras milling around in the background look like they might actually BE high school students for a change - not the collection of superannuated adolescents that generally populate modern teen flicks. It's a minor triumph to be sure, but a triumph nonetheless.

told me it reminded him of some kids in middle school.

2008-12-30 - It has been 8 months since I saw this at the theatre, and I bought it last night. I'm glad I did because I forgot a few things. Owen Wilson is very funny as Drillbit Taylor. He's a bum who is hired by three freshman in high school who are being bullied every day at school. At first, Drillbit takes advantage of them and takes their stuff, but later he finally decides to help. If you love the comedy of Owen Wilson, I highly recommend DRILLBIT TAYLOR!!!
