Editorial Review:
Willie Nelson, Rodney Dangerfield, Neil Diamond, Jack Nicholson and Ozzy Osbourne walk into a bar. Sounds like the first line of a bad joke - for me it was the start of the strangest year of my life. Just three weeks after I'd asked a friend to take some pictures of me as Ozzy just for fun, I was onstage at The Imperial Palace and hanging out with other fake celebrities in Las Vegas. Two weeks after that I was flown to New York by ABC, then to Chicago's NBC studios. And that was just the beginning. Fooling thousands at the Kentucky Derby, or hundreds in line at Ozzfest live on the air, it was as he might say, a crazy train. "My Year As Ozzy" is a fast-paced, hilarious drunken romp through Ozzy's reality and the fake world of celebrity look-alikes, revealing that sometimes, almost real is real enough.
My Year As Ozzy: A Celebrity Look-Alike Experiences Fame From The Inside Out Reviews:
Wholeheartedly entertained by Don Wrege's style & honesty
2009-07-25 - As much as he relates his experiences as a celebrity look-alike, Don Wrege tells colorful stories of human experience garnered from a life of wanting and pursuing celebrity, observing celebrity, and coming to appreciate the nature of the beast known as "celebrity".
Weaved throughout Don's tale are poignant and entertaining glimpses into the human condition and people's fascination, dedication to - sometimes obsession with - celebrity.
What Don Wrege's story tells us, among other things, is that there is a definite line between being a celebrity and just looking like one, a line between actually being the person and passing oneself off as the actual person - a line that is easy to cross if one is not careful - and a small world between oneself and the famous person one looks like.
Some other thoughts that 'My Year as Ozzy' imparts are that looking like someone famous is the easy part; imitating that famous person is also easy, because people are already sold on the look; but, no matter how much you look and act like that famous person, you are still you, so just have fun.
Though this is not a how-to guide, those who happen to look like someone famous and are trying to decide what to do with that blessing/curse might learn some valuable lessons - and be wholeheartedly entertained by Don Wrege's style and honesty.
A fun read
