  • Editorial Review:
Spider-Man, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four will never be the same after this outrageously funny spoof of your favorite comic book movies! Drake Bell (Drake & Josh) stars as a nerdy high school student bitten by a genetically-altered dragonfly. He stumbles hilariously through the process of becoming a crime-fighter and as his new powers grow, so do the laughs. Sara Paxton (Aquamarine) and Christopher McDonald (Spy Kids 2) costar as the clueless damsel in distress and the comically intense super villain, along with Pamela Anderson and Leslie Nielsen. Going from superzero to superhero has never been this much fun!

Description of Superhero Movie (Extended Edition):
Adolescent fantasy meets sophomoric humor in the latest cuisinart comedy, Superhero Movie. The story of how frustrated loser Rick Riker (Drake Bell of Drake & Josh) becomes the superpowered Dragonfly is largely poking fun at Spider-Man, but there are a handful of digs at X-Men, Fantastic Four, and other Marvel Comics superhuman flicks. What's disappointing is how few of the jokes are specific to the genre--the abundance of gags about urine, feces, horniness, and especially flatulence (long, drawn-out gags about flatulence) could have been shoehorned into a parody of pretty much anything. The strong point of Superhero Movie is the above-average cast; while there are the obligatory cameos by the likes of Pamela Anderson, the cast is mostly filled out with actual actors like Marion Ross (Happy Days), Christopher McDonald (Thelma & Louise), Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development), and Leslie Nielsen, who trots out his trademark deadpan one more time. As Dragonfly's love interest, Sara Paxton (Aquamarine) does a flawless and subtle imitation of Kirsten Dunst's sultry vocal mannerisms. And for fans of Airplane! (the movie that started the whole everything-but-the-kitchen-sink genre of comedy), there's an appropriate cameo by Robert Hays as Rick Riker's father. Superhero is a step above such recent tripe as Date Movie and Meet the Spartans... but sadly, that's not saying much. --Bret Fetzer

    Superhero Movie (Extended Edition) Reviews:
Keep moving, there's nothing to see here 2 Star Review
2009-10-28 - When he is bitten by a genetically altered dragonfly, nerdy kid Rick Riker (played by Drake Bell) becomes a superhero, the Dragonfly. But, things are not easy for the Dragonfly. First of all, he seems to have a readymade archenemy in the form of the Hourglass (Christopher McDonald). Secondly, he has his well-meaning, but incurably clueless, Uncle Albert (Leslie Nielson) helping him out. Can he save the day? Oh boy, don't ask!

OK, where do I start with this one? I have always been a fan of the Zucker comedy films - Airplane, The Naked Gun, and so forth, but by this time the jokes are getting a little thin. There is too much swearing, and the sexuality is grotesquely juvenile and highly embarrassing. To make matters worse, the DVD commits one of my unpardonable sins - it does not allow you to bypass the commercials, disabling the Menu button, and forcing the viewer to Fast Forward through each and every one.

Now, as with all of the films of this genre, this movie does have its Laugh-Out-Loud moments, but not enough to make it more than just tolerable. I wanted to like this movie, I really did, but I just couldn't. So, I am afraid that I have to give it a thumbs-down. Keep moving, there's nothing to see here.

wan "Airplane" knockoff 2 Star Review
    2009-08-28 - **1/2

The "movie-genre parody" is often the option of last resort for Hollywood screenwriters who`ve run out of inspiration. Having already skewered such popular genres as the disaster movie, the sword-and-sandal epic, romantic comedies, horror films, spy thrillers, crime dramas etc., they now take aim at the "superhero movie," with a flick ingeniously entitled - yea, you guessed it - "Superhero Movie."

In a time span of eighty-minutes that feels more like eight hundred, "Superhero Movie" lumbers from one unfunny joke and sight gag to another, barely taking time out for such apparently dispensable elements as originality or wit. However, in all fairness, one should at least note that writer/director Craig Mazin saves most of his best material - such as it is - for the last half hour.

Drake Bell is the Peter Parker to Sara Paxton's Mary Jane Watson in what is essentially a flatfooted parody of the "Spiderman" franchise, with the nerdy high school student in this case being bitten by a genetically-engineered dragonfly, turning him into the crime-fighting figure known as - what else? - The Dragonfly. The movie also makes the occasional obligatory nod to other comic book adaptations such as "Iron Man," "X-Men" and "Batman Begins," but, since it was released before "The Dark Knight," there is no reference to that landmark work - or to its iconic Joker character - in this film, a real lost opportunity.

We've indeed come a long way from the glory days of "Airplane" (a fact further emphasized by the presence here of David Zucker as co-producer and Leslie Nielson as one of the movie's co-stars), but "Superhero Movie" is substandard even by "Epic Movie/Date Movie" standards.

2009-07-03 - i had just watch yhis movie and it is the best comedy movie, it's is so funny, i would recomend every customer to get this movie.

ONE OF THE BETTER SPOOF MOVIES! 3 Star Review
2009-06-28 - 'Super Hero Movie' is a much more even entry in the spoof movie genre, but I didn't think there were many really funny moments. Even though many of these spoof films lately have been really bad, they may have had a few scenes that were way funnier than anything in this film. I found this film very watch-able, but there are some really stupid gags in this film too.

One joke in particular seemed really dumb involving Dragon Fly and The Human Torch on top of a building with both super heroes wanting to perch on a gargoyle statue. First off I have read many comic books in my life and I don't remember Johnny Storm ever perching anywhere! I only mention this because the joke involving him is really lame, so putting him in this situation for a laugh doesn't even work. I would have thought Daredevil would have been a better choice and the character's blindness would have been easy to get a quick laugh from.

About 98 percent of this film is a spoof on the Spider-Man films. There are a few (very few) gags involving other super heroes including X-Men, Fantastic Four and Batman, which is a shame because there are so many films in this genre to make fun of and it might have helped this film be funnier. I enjoyed this film because I love super hero films and this film has a better cast than most in this genre.

    This sucks. 1 Star Review
2009-06-14 - What a waste of time. The Scary movie's were great, but this one just sucks. The first 10 mins are funny then the movie stinks except for a few comic reliefs but comedy master Leslie Neilson. Neilson is the only saving factor in this film, and even he, the lord of laughs cannot keep this stinker afloat. Waste of time, fast forward to the Leslie Neilson parts, other the that pass.
