Editorial Review:
The Cat in the Hat is a marketing ploy disguised as a wildly designed movie for hyperactive kids, and it could use a dose of Ritalin. It hardly matters, though, because kids will surely enjoy the rampant romp that occurs when the top-hatted feline convinces young Sally (Dakota Fanning) and Conrad (Spencer Breslin) to wreak havoc in the home their mother (Kelly Preston) has neatly prepared for an upcoming party. It's all in the name of fun, and while Seuss's classic rhymes are relegated to voice-over narration, director Bo Welch capitalizes on his background as one of Hollywood's most gifted production designers (with credits including Edward Scissorhands and Men in Black), turning the Seussian town of "Anville" into a playful pastiche of pastels. As played by Mike Myers under layers of fur and latex, Dr. Seuss's mischievous Cat is mayhem personified, and the movie suffers from his anything-goes approach to getting a laugh. And though Myers delivers a few laughs while channeling voices from his own comedic repertoire (including "Coffee Talk" maven Linda Richman), a little of this Cat goes a long way, and he nearly wears out his welcome. --Jeff Shannon
Kicking and Screaming/Dr. Seuss' the Cat in the Hat (Back-To-Back) Reviews:
This is NOT the Cat in the Hat
2009-11-24 - Although my 4 year old liked it, I was disappointed in the crude humor, a few slips of bad language, and the wretched Cat's laugh that annoyed me to no end.
This is NOT the version of this story that I wanted my child to watch, and it is NOT the cute story that we all watched as children.
BOOOO!!!!
Terrible!!
2009-11-23 - I don't even need to write a review on it...
It's all been said here...
The worst Movie I've ever seen in my life, and thats an understatement!
Folks, trust all the negative comments...they are the correct ones.
MORE "AUSTIN POWERS" THAN DR. SEUSS!!
2009-11-02 - Not for kids!! it has been stated before - in other reviews, but let me reiterate it here NOT FOR YOUNG KIDS!!! This movie is anti-kid friendly and Michael Myers is more like Austin-Powers in his level of vulgarity and vileness than the Dr. Seuss chraacter his is SUPPOSED To be portraying!! I mistakenly bought this thinking it was Jim Carey, after just watching his version of the Grinch (an excellent movie by the way) The movie is not entirely bad - but as far as I can remember, it does not follow the book - and is aimed at a mature audience as many of the jokes kids will not get. I hate to give any movie a thumbs down, but this movie surely deserves one.
Director, GET YOUR BRAIN OUTTA THE HAT!!
2009-10-26 - This has to be the worst movie I'd seen in a long time. Its not that they left stuff out of the book. Its not for kids, way, way, way to much fowl language for kids. The director who made this film needs to go back to school or get your head outta the hat. The book is good, don't get me wrong but the movie....Garbage
cat in the hat
2009-10-18 - Oooo, I love this movie. It's funny as heck. Yes, it's crude here and there, but the younger kids won't get the jokes since there young and too focused on the big cat. Mike Myers gives a good perfomance and I can't think of any one else who could do the job. Yeesh, mike myers was Austin Powers.... I think he can do anything in the movies.. Anyway, I liked dakota fanning and the others as well. They all did good.
If you can't handle crude humor or have no sense of humor at all, than maybe this movie ain't for you.
