Description of A Mighty Wind:
There's A Mighty Wind a-blowin', along with the gales of laughter you'll get from Christopher Guest's third exercise in brilliant "mockumentary." After tackling small-town theatricals in Waiting for Guffman and obsessive dog-show contestants in Best in Show, Guest and his reliable stable of repertory players (including Fred Willard, Parker Posey, and Bob Balaban) apply their improvisational genius to a latter-day reunion of fictional '60s-era folk singers, a comedic goldmine that Guest first explored 30 years earlier on The National Lampoon Radio Hour. Collaborating with costar and cowriter Eugene Levy (who gives the film's funniest performance), Guest is so delicate in his satirical approach that the laughs aren't always obvious, and the subtlety can be as wistful (as in Catherine O'Hara's performance as Levy's auto-harpist partner) as it is hilarious. Some may wish for more blatant comedy, but that would compromise the genuine affection that Guest & Co. have for the music they're spoofing. --Jeff Shannon
A Mighty Wind Reviews:
more great satire from Christopher Guest
2009-07-18 - If you are a fan of folk music from the late 50's/early 60's, (& can appreciate the humor of "This Is Spinal Tap"), then you'll probably love Christopher Guest's knowing & often hilarious take on this, at one time, hugely popular era of our musical culture. But if you're someone who has little or no Kingston Trio, The New Christy Minstrels, (& even Sonny & Cher) in your collection-3 of the groups satirized the most in this film- then you probably won't appreciate much of the humor that Guest throws at you. Having been a huge fan of that genre, though, I found it great fun trying to figure out all the groups that he alluded to throughout the film. But don't get offended if he "roasts" one of your favorites, as in "...Spinal Tap", for there is usually an underlying feeling of Guest's love & respect for those great artists. He just has a rare gift for seeing the humorous side of anyone or anything he puts his mind to writing about. Enjoy!
Definitely Exceeded My Expectations
2009-07-15 - I watched A Mighty Wind expecting it to be another Best in Show or Waiting for Guffman, but was hilariously surprised at how much of a departure from the previous Christopher Guest films it was. As is normal for them, the characters are completely nuts and the humor dry, but in this one there are all these folk groups, each of which has it s own host of bizarre members. It was very funny to see how much trouble is caused when they all get together for this reunion concert.
I like my comedies shaken, not stirred--and very dry.
2009-06-20 - The Irving Steinbloom Memorial Concert. The year: 2003. If you squint really hard, you might recognize the three members of The Folksmen as Spinal Tap, which would explain why the DVD release of The Return of Spinal Tap occurred in the same year. If you like extremely dry humor, this movie is for you, no matter your taste in music.
Guest skewers, but without malice
2009-04-30 - My two cents' worth about 'A Mighty Wind' -- oh, gosh, don't get me started about the Guest Ensemble's multiplicity of talents -- is that, beyond the satire, there is always something tender and human in Guest's films. I think that he's embarrassed of it; it sneaks its way into his films almost in spite of his efforts to repel it. For example, watch (and listen to the commentary on) the alternate take of "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" in the DVD extras. Christopher Guest's intelligent and witty, pointed humor -- and if you haven't seen 'A Mighty Wind' I hope that none of these reviews spoils the gags for you -- possesses no cruelty. Smart humor. Corny music. Who wudda thought? No one else could have done it.
fantastic film
2009-04-21 - If you watch this movie for the music alone you will have a good time. Kept me entertained from start to finish. I recommend you pick this one up for your collection.
