Editorial Review:
CAR TROUBLE STRANDS THREE DRAG QUEENS IN A CONSERVATIVE MIDWESTERN TOWN.
Description of To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar:
This clunky road movie about three drag queens (Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguziamo) who get stranded in a sleepy Nebraska town on their way to a beauty contest, is too uplifting for its own good. Released during drag's mid-'90s heyday when RuPaul and the Wigstock documentary were all the rage, To Wong Foo aimed straight for the mainstream with its inoffensive camp and "can't we all get along" moralism. While gay-activist groups howled about straights getting the lead roles in To Wong Foo, in the end the filmmakers really couldn't have done better than this trio of actors. John Leguziamo provides real sass and bite as a Latino (or should we saw Latina?) drag queen, and Wesley Snipes is surprisingly fierce as the imposing leader of the pack. Saddled with a cloying Southern accent and off-kilter wig, Patrick Swayze barely holds his own with his costars, though. To Wong Foo is best viewed as a cultural artifact of a time when it seemed as though drag could rule all tomorrow's parties. --Ethan Brown
To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar Reviews:
One the funniest movies I have ever seen....
2009-11-07 - To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Julie NewmarBarnone, one of the funniest films I have ever seen. The now late Patrick Swayze a.k.a Vita Bohem who recently succumbed to Pancreatic Cancer, was brilliant in this, as were Weslie Snipes a.k.a Noxema Jackson and John Leguizamo a.k.a Chi Chi Rodriguez in their cross country quest for queendom. I like the fact that all the aforementioned actors are known for their masculinity and pull off androgyny quite convincingly. My order arrived as described. Five Star DVD with 5 Star service from both Amazon and MovieMArs.
Love this movie
2009-11-05 - This movie is absolutely my favorite of all times, thank you amazon for having it to where I could order it. Love this site.
Love This Movie
2009-10-29 - This is my favorite movie. I have always enjoyed this movie long before Patrick Swayze past away.
An Awesome Film!!!
2009-10-28 - I saw this on tv the night before we started filming my 'Pumpkin Man 2' movie, and I thought this was really good, and had a great storyline. It's always fun to see men dressed up as women. Patrick Swayze, John Leguizamo, and Wesley Snipes made awesome drag queens! Vida, Chi-Chi, and Noxeema are on a road trip to enter the 'drag queen of the year' contest in New York City. Their car dies and they must stay in a small town for the weekend. They befriend the locals, and soon become a big part of the town, until the Sheriff shows up and wants to arrest the drag queens. I love how everybody in town stick up for them. I highly recommend TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING JULIE NEWMAR!!!
Love this movie
2009-10-27 - The first two times I saw this movie, I saw only bits and pieces of it, different bits and pieces each time. Even in chunks, I liked it. Once I saw the full film, I fell in love. Patrick Swayze pulls off his role with stunning ease, making you forget that there is really a man under the make up, women's clothes, and wig. Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo tackle their roles with the same enthusiasm and manage to be equally as charming and convincing.
The movie tackles domestic violence in an understated fashion, showing a woman who is cowed and bullied but eventually, with the help of three "women" who have a courage she lacks, finds that courage and stands up to the coward that abuses her.
There's a little bit of romance, a little bit of action, more than a little drama. There is, quite literally, something for everyone in this movie. It's great for a lot of laughs, a couple of tears, and just a really great movie night at home.
Even my 8 & 6 yr old sons enjoy this movie!
