Editorial Review:
Weaving together the definitive story of the Seattle music scene through a series of interviews with the people who were there, this book contains more than 130 interviews, along with essential background information. Digging deeper than other accounts, this history begins in the early 1960s, tracing the chain of events that spawned some of the greatest rock acts of all time in the 1990s, including Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. First-ever interviews include Eddie Vedder's take on Pearl Jam’s history, a discussion among the members of Alice in Chains, and Layne Staley’s mother’s comments on her son's drug addiction and death. There is also plenty of information on less well-known aspects of the grunge scene, including the Riot Grrrl movement and the oft-overlooked but highly influential Seattle bands such as Mother Love Bone/Andy Wood, the Melvins, Screaming Trees, and Mudhoney. The end result is a comprehensive guide that includes a wealth of previously untold stories and offers a fresh and immediate approach to music history.
Grunge Is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music Reviews:
Grunge is Not Dead
2009-10-30 - This book takes a unique look into the world of grunge. No, it does not start in the early 1990s, but the 1970s--showing where the artists and fans of the time traced their roots in music. This book does focus on Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam (the big 4 of the grunge scene in Seattle) but also looks at other groups such as Melvins, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, and much more! The reason this book is unique--it is almost entirely made up of interviews from band members, fans, band managers, record producers, girlfriends, parents of the bands discussed. If you liked the music of the time, or just appreciate music in general, this is a must buy!
Grunge Is Dead
2009-10-14 - This book was a gift for my boyfriend. He loves Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, etc. and he can't put it down. He's almost finished with it and I just gave it to him last week.
Everyone who likes Seattle music, must have it
2009-10-11 - I think that it is the best "grunge"-related book that you could find. No invention, no guesswork, - only the words of people who really know what they talk about. Absolutely authentic - you just feel it. It took me one night to read it to the end - I couldn't help to stop and to go to bed :)
I love the fact that there is a lot of information not only about "the big four" (Alice In Chains, Nirvana, PJ, Soundgarden), but also about less, as to say, "commercially successfull" bands, and also about the bands which gave inspiration to so called "grunge".
There are a lot of music, and there are personal stories of people you are interested in, too. Sad ones and absolutely hilarious ones.
I want to mention that people who like Layne Staley, should read this book - you will find the story of one of the best rock singers ever, respectfully and frankly told and collected.
Buy it, you won't regret.
I loved "Grunge is Dead".
2009-10-01 - I don't read a lot of books but once I started reading "Grunge is Dead" I had a hard time putting it down. It is an excelent insight into the mindset of all of these musicians that were a part of the Seattle music scene. Very interesting.
Grunge...dead? Who knows
2009-08-22 - The Grunge Era might be over, but the music still lives on. Learn all about it, and the bands that really made the grunge era happen! This book is very informative and the oral biography format was a good choice. I wish Novoselic, Grohl and Chris Cornell were available to contribute!
