Editorial Review:
The Seattle band once notable for its arena rock anthems is now remarkable mostly for its hushed melodies. On Pearl Jam's fifth album, the rockers seem slapdash ("Do the Evolution", "Brain of J"), and the arty experiments sound self-conscious (especially the 67-second knockoff, "-"). That leaves the ballads, especially the lovely lilt of "Low Light" and the clear-eyed lament of "Wishlist." On the latter song, Ed Vedder (as he now calls himself) yearns to be many different things, from a neutron bomb to a souvenir key chain. However, the line that sticks out is, "I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me." Instead of considering himself lucky to be a rock star, Vedder sounds relieved to have moved beyond it. --Keith Moerer
Yield Reviews:
Neglected 90s classic.
2009-12-22 - Not neglected, really, but it didn't sell as much as their first three. And it was #2 the week it came out (damn you, Titanic soundtrack).
This was a welcome return to form for Pearl Jam after the uneven No Code. Sad to say that it didn't bring them back to the top where they deserved to be, though they did storm the pop charts again the following year with the non-album single Last Kiss.
Faithful, Given To Fly, Wishlist, Do The Evolution, MFC and In Hiding are all great songs, and the rest is nothing to sneeze at either (except for maybe that untitled song). Lyrically, Eddie Vedder is at the top of his game here. The arrangements are great and the production is nice and clear. This is probably my favorite PJ album.
I swallowed my face just to keep from biting
2009-09-22 - It seems half the world has ADHD and can barely spend 45 minutes listening to one of the greatest singer songwriters of our time lay his soul and psyche bare album after album. What other band out there delivers this much diversity, raw energy, honesty and melody so consistently? Do the people rating this a 1 or a 2 even have their speakers plugged in correctly?
I know it is only fair to compare a band or even a human being to what they were the day before but the Ten and Vs. comparisons were tired in 1994 and they are even more tired 15 years later. Imagine a new band released Yield in 1998 or even today. Given to Fly Wishlist, Do the Evolution, In Hiding - all would be in nonstop rotation on rock radio and be considered classics if this was the band's first LP. Instead the only songs that linger on the radio from PJ are from Ten and Vs. with Betterman thrown in as the lone post mega-popularity concession. Without the name Pearl Jam and the heavy weight it carries this album would have sold way more copies. I guess this is true of a lot of bands after they have passed their peak in fame who are still producing quality work.
As with most Pearl Jam albums released after Vs. this one needs a couple listens for proper appreciation. Highly recommended!
Critics be damned, I LOVE this album.
2009-07-18 - This is Pearl Jam at their most honest. This is also Pearl Jam at their most uncertain. Eddie Vedder sounds distincly like a man rather than the howling God of "Ten" and "Vs." Even the guitars sound like they are asking questions. "Do the Evolution" could have easily been turned into a fist pumping, testosterone injected thrasher. Instead the guitars are muted and muffled and Vedder sings every line as if it were a sick joke. I leave you to decide which deliverly is more powerful. As someone who has been a Pearl Jam fan most of my life, I have always considered the band's one indispensible quality to be their sincirety. No where is this quality more clear than on "Yield."

2009-05-29 - I never quite understood the appeal of this album, or the appeal of most of the popular Pearl Jam albums for that matter. It seems the more popular a Pearl Jam album is, the more likely I am to think the album isn't quite as good as one of the bands less popular efforts. Yield is a fine example of that.
Something about the vocal melodies on this particular effort strike me as unsatisfying for the most part. Pearl Jam is (or was) certainly capable of creating a mighty fine album when they wanted to. Problem is, Yield doesn't show me any of the bands finer qualities.
Yield doesn't strike me as an album you should own, and just like Ten, it's my belief the two albums both have something in common- they are both overrated because the vocal melodies are weak, and the songwriting isn't up to the bands usual high standards.
Dont STOP, just YIELD please!!!
2009-05-18 - I want to start off by saying that im a die hard Pearl jam fan. Theyv been my favorite band ever since they first hit the scene back in the early 90's. They have hit some highs and some lows but as a band, overall they have quietly become one of americas greatest rock and roll bands of all time. So now that i have that off my chest, lets talk about Pearl Jams greatest album of all time, Yield. Yes, they have given us TEN, VS, Vitalogy... but this is the album that brought pearl jam back to what they are now. Its the album thats true to who they actually are, A band thats here to stay.
