2008-11-12 - I read Clavell's book of the same title. When the movie/series came out, I liked it. I didn't think it deserved to win an emmy, but it was interesting. On the other hand, the book was fantastic and enlightening.

Disc 1 is just not playable
2008-10-15 - Having read other, previous feedback complaining about Disc 1 and its defectiveness, I was a bit wary before ordering this DVD. But I went ahead and bought it. Sure enough, my Disc 1 was also defective. Amazon needs to address this issue. We sent the video back for a refund but were still out some ancillary costs.

As for the video itself? Very dated. Also the music is too loud on the soundtrack. Pierce is great, as usual, but the acting otherwise is not the greatest.

Noble Effort
2008-09-15 - This is a longer version than the VHS. It is the mini-series as made for TV on DVD; this accounts for the additional minutes. The movies is broken into four segments, which I objected to (at first) but it gives one an intermission every hour or so. The content of the movie is exactly the same as the VHS tape. I have heard some people say that it did not have this scene or that scene, but they were all there. I would rather have had the DVD run as one movie (hence the 4 stars), but I really do enjoy this movie and I do recommend this DVD highly.
