Pierce Brosnan takes a step away from James Bond with his malevolent role in Shattered. Neil Randall (Gerard Butler) seems a loving father and the perfect husband for his happy wife Abby (Maria Bello). But when the two leave their daughter with a babysitter and drive off, a man with a gun (Brosnan) appears in their backseat and puts them through a series of tests that threaten to destroy their marriage. Shattered is a taut little thriller that comes to a not entirely satisfying end; once we learn what's behind the kidnapper's games, the air goes out of the movie. But as it goes along, Shattered has a lot of momentum, mystery, and tension, and the solid cast keeps the emotions gritty and intense. Brosnan works his steely-eyed squint, Butler practically foams at the mouth with repressed rage, and Bello manages to be frightened, determined, and sexy, all at the same time. Keep your expectations low and Shattered will be an enjoyable thriller. --Bret Fetzer

Brosnan shatters the life of a successful couple 
2009-10-05 - This entertaining film keeps us on a pins and needles the whole way through. Gerard Butler plays a man who seems to have everything, including a beautiful wife (Maria Bello), until a gunman (Pierce Brosnan) shows up in the back seat of his vehicle, and demands that he do whatever he says, or he will kill his child. It seems like an unbelievable situation which becomes even more unbelievable at times as the kidnapper puts ever more agonizing demands on the couple for no apparent reason. But there is a reason for all of this, and it becomes clear with a surprising twist that deliciously teases the viewer to the very end.
Good acting, poor story... 
2009-06-04 - Why pay three good actors and then waste their talent on something so trivial?
A child of a well off couple is kidnapped. The parents (Butler and Bello) and the kidnapper (Brosnan) engage in a game: the kidnapper has them complete certain tasks in exchange for their daughter's life. Soon though, the parents realize that the tasks, while laying ruin to their own lives, bring no true advantage to the brute. But, all is not what it seems...
While the seed of the idea is fantastic, it needs a Hitchcock level of skill before it can be transported into the "gripping-thriller territory". As it is, there are some severe holes in the plot that make the entire story unconvincing. I was never sold on the fact that the couple should have felt threatened to the point of obeying the kidnapper unquestioningly. Without this credibility, the entire story collapses. No story, no film...
Furthermore, the movie does have a made-for-tv feel (it could be a good play...). I find it visually challenging as well, due to the monotonous colors: it is difficult to tell settings apart (with the exception of the all white interiors of the "competition" office).
Skip it, unless you are a die hard fan of any of the three actors. Then check it off your list and move on quickly...
The Game Of Life (And Death)...
2009-05-09 - I love thrillers, especially when they keep me guessing right up to the end. SHATTERED is such a film. I would think I had it figured out, only to realize I had it all wrong. Neil (Gerard Butler) and his wife, Abby (Maria Bello from The Dark, A Hstory Of Violence) are taken hostage by a madman (Pierce Brosnan) who seems to know everything about their lives. The couple's young daughter has also been abducted separately. Neil and Abby are led through a series of career / life-destroying tasks by their new nemesis. However, appearances are very deceiving! SHATTERED has a unique pay-off that I never saw coming. Brosnan is exceptional in his ruthless role. I'm certainly not his biggest fan, but he's truly unhinged here. Hopefully, this movie will do for him what MR. BROOKS did for Kevin Costner. Check it out...

2009-04-20 - This is a movie that will let you see one thing, and then another, and keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through.
You will not want to see it just once. It invites discussion and a deep search into ones own moral universe about what is right or wrong in life, marriage and work!
I LOVED this film very, very much and feel it should be watched at school and used as a counselling aid by therapists. All the actors did a great job with their roles and their range of expressions are stretched to the limits.....
Anyone married to a "Player" personality MUST watch this!!
