Editorial Review:
Although not in the same vein as the deliciously hallucinogenic earlier Floyd works such as Ummagumma and Dark Side of the Moon, Animals is innovative and musically diverse in its own right. Inspired in part by George Orwell's political fable Animal Farm, Roger Waters condemns the avarice and inequalities of capitalism, metaphorically and musically grouping humans as pigs, dogs, and sheep. The pigs are self-righteous hypocrites inflicting their beliefs on everyone else, the dogs greedy money-grabbers, and the sheep witless followers. Dark, cynical, and brilliantly composed, Animals is an ingenious and under-acknowledged album. --Naomi Gesinger
Animals Reviews:
Superb Floyd
2009-11-30 - Crisp and clean throughout. Animals is a superlative PF CD! 5 stars are so common now as to be nearly meaningless but come on, this is Floyd, and all their music deserves the 5 star award, de veras
Get out of the road if you want to grow old
2009-11-25 - Is it Pink Floyd's best album? What do I know? Does it feature Pink Floyd at its rawest rocking peak? Absolutely. My favorite PF album without question (and I say this with all biasness having been released on my 20th birthday 1977 compelling my roomies and me to race down to the U of I Champaign record store for first dibs). The album for me retains its freshness better than the others (although the freshness date for their `71 to '79 stretch of work will never expire). For the life of me I do not know how Pigs TDO is left off of the PF greatest hits releases. Memories of the PF Soldier Field Chicago show I attended in June '77 remain vivid as well. Imagine Animals and WYWH back to back live. Hey you Whitehouse, charade you are....
5-star Classic Album
2009-11-24 - There's no denying this album's longevity. You've seen it on countless best-of decades lists. It's a mainstay on critic's favorite lists. In short, there comes a point where the hype dies and people arrive at a consensus.
My favorite thing about Animals is how atypical of an album it is. The two short Pigs on the Wing songs bookend the album, serving dual role as both the friendly greeting and goodbye. The real meat of the album (dogs, pigs, sheep) last nearly a combined 40 minutes. One would think these songs may drag on repeat listens. This is not the case. No small feat for just three songs... all three are completely brilliant in their own unique way. As far as classic albums go, this one is a top 5 favorite for me.
animals or wish you were here?
2009-10-14 - Shine On You Crazy Diamond is possibly the most dear piece of music of all times for me but it could very well be The Animals and not Wish You Were Here which is my favorite Pink Floyd album overall. It might have to do with the time distortions they have loaded this one with. Pigs On The Wing are such a spiritual boost. Dogs might be my favorite song here and it used to freak me out how many times while listening to this song back in 1977 and 1978 in my mother's place, with large dogs running around the house, I used to look out the window, forgetting I was hearing the music. And no, I did not do any drugs back then. A few days ago while on a business trip in Europe I was fortunate enough to attend a rock festival in Freising, Germany, where next to the Sylvan episode (the most amazing show by a vocalist I could ever imagine) I had experienced the complete Animals tour repertoire done by RPWL.; it was spectacular. It is interesting that 2 of my 7 most favorite present rock bands, RPWL and Mostly Autumn both came to life as Pink Floyd cover bands, and another one Porcupine Tree is also very heavily Pink Floyd influenced. If you love Pink Floyd and are searching for other great bands, please make sure you know all 3. Another great song on the album is Pigs, but that only leaves one other song, Sheep and that was the starting song of Pink Floyd's Animals tour. Basically it is a great album with phenomenal music and great lyrics.
