Live at Pompei Reviews:
Not the best version 1 Star Review
2006-10-29 - This is a great film, but do yourself a favor and buy the DVD version of this - the content and quality is superior.

Pink Floyd is my god 5 Star Review
2006-08-27 - I was about 16 years old when I owned THE WALL plus every single studio album that preceded it. I was a snob, however, and didn't truck with live albums. Furthermore, I was a Pink Floyd snob because I was a lyric snob. To me, everything before DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was something to be forgiven. Later, I'd allow UMMAGUMMA into the fold because the music spoke to me of things lyrics cannot, but otherwise I spent many years as a big old nasty Pink Floyd snob.

I popped into a DVD store this week and was disappointed by the selection. In music, however, was LIVE AT POMPEII. The famous one, right? I bought it. Tracks from Echoes, Meddle, A Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagumma, Dark Side of the Moon... We're talking oldies here. We're talking Syd Barrett's influence, although he was in the nuthouse when this was made.

The music is simply amazing. It moves me, it talks to me, it demands that I quit working to actually pay attention. I meant for it to be background, but it intruded. I thought I was buying the CD, but I actually bought the VCD, so I had a chance to see the guys at the ruins.

These guys obviously have the skills to do anything they want, without thinking about it, and can therefore concentrate on what they want to say.

Roger in the studio composing "On The Run." David shirtless, or cradling the guitar in his lap and doing weird beautiful sh-t. Nick looking like he's about to pass out from exhaustion after every thundering flawless drum combo but driving himself relentlessly. Rick looking like Jesus when he's hairy-faced and like an imp when he's clean-shaven. Keyboard mastery. Roger beating the crap out of the cymbals and gong. Roger screaming like a nut in "Careful With That Axe Eugene." In short, Roger having a whole lot more fun than he did moaning "Goodbye Cruel World" at the end of first LP of THE WALL.

I'll tell you what I think. When I left the US, Pink Floyd had gotten back together after a nasty feud, and made some really awful music. They need to watch this VCD, together, right now. This is what creation is all about. You watch this, or just listen to it with head averted, and you feel the magic. It makes you want to create. It stirs your soul. This is why we write, make music, paint, draw, dance, sculpt, whittle, or whatever we do for our own souls and sanity and possibly posterity.
