Editorial Review:
This is the revised and improved critical guide to the work of Pink Floyd, in concert, on record and on film. Here is everything you ever needed to know about Pink Floyd in an informative two disc set. Using the actual words of the band and critics, Inside Pink Floyd is the definitive critical journey through of the music of Pink Floyd from the Syd Barret era to Pulse. FEATURES: Rare unreleased film of concert performances from sound and television archives around the world featuring a rare performance of Atom Heart Mother performed by the band alone without the orchestra. Also reviewed is the famous performance broadcast across Europe from a floating stage on the lagoon at Venice.
Inside Pink Floyd: A Critical Review 1967-1996 Reviews:
Lost time
2007-06-06 - This critical review is useless. It could be probably 60 minutes long only including the material that is worth it. What are those empty comments by Mostly Autumn? It hurts my intellect, give me a break.
It is a good history of Floyd
2007-01-18 - I can understand some of the negative comments of other viewers, but I found the DVD a good historical re-cap of Floyd to include some back-stage shots I had not previously seen. I enjoyed some of the goodies that come in the DVD.
There are no earth-shattering revelations to those who know Floyd. Yes, we know about Syd and David vs. Rogers, etc. etc. However, someone not from my generation that is just getting into Floyd may find some of this DVD interesting.
I don't think the producer intended the DVD set to be a compilation of Floyd, however. I think that it is worth the price of $30 to gain a bit of insight. I don't think it is overly remarkable but it was very interesting to me, nevertheless.
Know what you're getting here ...
2006-12-16 - This should really be called something like "The members of Mostly Autumn and a few critics talk about Pink Floyd." Now, I don't have anything against Mostly Autumn. Heather Findlay is quite nice to look at, they're all Floyd fans as I am, and I'm sure their music is very pleasant. But why am I supposed to care when one of them talks about why they personally like a particular Floyd track?
Whatever the case, I give this set an extra star, as I feel most of these knock-off "Critical Review" things deserve, solely for the obscure music clips they dig up. It's nice to get some rarely seen clips of our favorite bands in action. Granted, this was probably done out of necessity, as the makers of this series appear to have not secured the rights to any official releases, but in the end, it's one of the few things that make this series mildly interesting. Yes, the clips we get are usually only small snippets with mediocre sound quality, but then nowhere do these "Critical Reviews" claim to focus on musical performances. They are what they say they are -- reviews. More *fan* reviews in some cases than actual *critical* reviews, but whatever.
The only thing that irked me was having cover bands (including Mostly Autumn) performing some of the original tunes over Floyd-related graphics, presumably when no unprotected Floyd performance of the original track could be found. I think I'd rather hear nothing at all than a second-rate cover version.
Useless review
2006-11-27 - We don't need these useless talking on Pink Floyd and cheap production giving just SECONDS of vintage live performances of the band. Comments would really come from the people who actually lived the experience.
All we want is the ultimate video compilation of the band with films that actually exist; material that has been largely bootlegged. This is just a small bunch of the most popular, up to DSOTM, that it could be the video support for a real "Critical Overview Part I: 67 - 73":
- January 20 1967 UFO Club - Joe Durden Smith filmed the band for Granada TV
- Top of the Pops - April 6 1967 "Arnold Layne" and July 6 1967 "See Emily Play"
- PF at Tabernakel - 1968 BBC promo film for Set the Control for the Heart of the Sun (once available on bootleg DVD)
- Belgium promo clips (67 to 69) - this large selection of promo clips has been largely bootlegged all around the world. Isn't it time for an official release?
- American Bandstand - with Barrett (68)
- Live at KQED studios USA with Gilmour (70) - The first official release was recently withdrawn by OBSCURE and greedy hands... (Who are they?). This one has been available on bootleg as Live at Fillmore both on audio and video.
- PF live at Saint Tropez (1970) - formerly shown on French TV program "POP Deux" and recently available on bootleg DVD.
- Complete Kralingen Pop Festival (70) - on Stamping Ground DVD is shown only excerpts of 2 tracks (bad sound and bad image). The band performed one hour and a half.
- Music Power: European Music Revolution - a film by French director Jerome Laperrousaz based on the 1970 rock festival held at Amougies (Belgium) - The band performed Interstellar Overdrive jamming with festival host Frank Zappa (Zappa denied the meeting but there are photos of it).
- Dark Side of the Moon at Rainbow Theatre - On the official DSOTM DVD is shown a part of this performance in stunning condition (both audio and image).
This is the real thing, so: Do we need all these so called Critical Reviews about PF? I think we don't. In fact Pink Floyd doesn't deserve it.
