Description of Murphy's Romance:
Director Martin Ritt (Norma Rae) helmed this offbeat romance that earned costar James Garner an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a widowed druggist who befriends a confused divorcee (Sally Field) and her son, who move to a small rural town to start over. The laid-back performance of Garner as a man finding love "for the last time in his life" contrasts wonderfully with Field's portrayal of a woman scared and unsure of what the future may hold for her, and the two of them together exhibit great comic timing. As well written and as deftly performed as any movie of its type, Murphy's Romance will rope you in with its winning style. --Robert Lane
Murphy's Romance Reviews:
Best romance ever!!!
2009-12-01 - They shouldn't make a good romantic pairing, but somehow James Gardner and Sally Fields are perfect. It's an old fashion romance movie. Perfect if your not looking for a sex in your face movie. You can actually watch this in front of kids.
All-time favorite.
2009-11-30 - A comedy-romance not to be missed. The chemistry between Sally Field and James Garner is tangible. And the unforgettable ending ... "How do you like your eggs?"
Add this movie to your collection. You will be delighted.
A favorite for years
2009-11-12 - I watch old movies frequently, many of them classics from the 30s. This is one of the recent ones. As another review put it, James Garner makes this movie. My favorite scene is the one in which Emma (Sally Fields) is eating an ice cream cone with her son (Corey Haim before he got into all the trouble), and sees Murphy (James Garner) playing the fiddle at a Saturday night dance in town. As the band takes a break (to let everyone go to the bathroom, he tells Emma), he steps outside for a brief visit. She has already met him when she leaves a poster in his drug store. A lot of the back story is effortlessly provided in that short scene. We learn he is a widower, he is popular with the ladies and he is a fixture in the town. We learn his age (I'm a grand daddy) and a lot of the plot gets going right there. Eventually, they get together and I agree with another reviewer that Brian Kerwin does a wonderful job with the role of the shiftless but likable ex-husband. This is a classic and I've probably watched it 100 times.

2009-10-16 - I purchased this DVD for my mom. I had not seen this movie in years since it is not shown on TV very often. We forgot how truly enjoyable this movie was.
