Editorial Review:
The heroic story of a young Norse man raised by Native American Indians who wages a personal war against the Vikings that barbarically raided his tribe.
Description of Pathfinder (Unrated Edition):
Pathfinder is a curious, cross-genre movie with elements of horror, sword-clanging fantasy, historical fiction, and Native American mysticism. A classic story of an outsider-hero, Pathfinder is set approximately five centuries before Columbus’ arrival in the New World, a time when Vikings were claiming real estate in Greenland and eastern North America. A young Norse boy is abandoned by his disapproving, conqueror-father and adopted by an aboriginal tribe. He grows up to become Ghost (Karl Urban), almost-but-not-entirely accepted by natives, yet a fierce swordsman and defender of Indians after a terrible assault on those whom he loves best. Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) plays the fiercest of the invaders, a merciless leader who tangles with Ghost’s inherent prowess as a fighter, and engages in a psychological as well as physical struggle with him in the film’s final third, which involves a harrowing journey through an avalanche-prone mountain path. Russell Means (The Last of the Mohicans) is a typically comforting presence as the all-wise Pathfinder, leader of a tribal nation and Ghost’s supporter, while Moon Bloodgood (Eight Below) is outstanding as a love interest with nerves of steel. Marcus Nispel (who directed the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) guides the brutal if often exhilarating action as if it were amplified history. He makes the point for a contemporary audience that Vikings were as terrifying a danger to those whom they conquered as, say, Klingons are in Star Trek--precisely by making his Vikings seem so reminiscent of Klingons. --Tom Keogh

Stills from Pathfinder Pathfinder (Unrated Edition) Reviews:
First Vikings & Indians and then CONAN THE BARBARIAN
2009-12-16 - A strange and dark film pitting native Americans against some really brutal Vikings. Visually terrific with the usual pro performances by Karl Urban (LOTR, STAR TREK), Moon Bloodgood (TERMINATOR SALVATION, 8 BELOW) ,Clancy Brown ( HIGHLANDER )and Russell Means (LAST OF THE MOCHICANS). Some terrific battle scenes and, in the unrated version, pretty violent. Makes me interested in seeing how this director, Marc Nispel, can reignite the long dormant CONAN franchise.
Mixed reivew
2009-12-15 - 4 stars for the visuals only. The imagery makes up for the incredibly stupid story components and lame scenes (such as a "car" chase down a mountain on sleds) really, really stupid (at least makes up enough for me to buy it for the visuals to use as studies). If you watch with the volume off the camera work/cinematography is well executed though overdone in some portions. Sets and wardrobe feel stagey but are interesting to look at. The vikings look more like something out of a fantasy/fairy/dragon setting rather than real norse gear, but again very cool concepts and designs.
This movie had a great deal of potential but fell off the wagon due to what I would guess is short sighted artistic vision and a leaning toward contemporary movie themes (the "screaming at the sky", "you killed my family!" revend thing that has been beat to death). This could have easily been great but was completely over done like a cheesier more cliched version (if possible) of Terminator, Die Hard (pick another of your choice. It has a decent gritty feel though the grittyness has a purposed feel, less natural than one would hope for leaving some scenes feeling too staged, predictable or adolecent in execution and vision. (Think anime where everything keeps getting a power up or some surprise indestructible quality ad nauseum, not precicely that but in the same vein)
It also seems the core concept of the film is drawn out to give it more purpose than a hack-n-slash flick. Which would have been fine had it been shorter and less pretentious about itself (the story) and just left as a hack-n-slash flick.
There have been rumors the director will be working on the new Conan in 2010. It think it could work provided it keeps a real feel to it and does not get a candied visuals or stupifying story like this or the "scorpion king" production. Hopefully with a good story and at least the DP from this film he could make a go of it.
Underestimated
2009-12-14 - When the movie was released in theater it didn't got much sccess so I decided to wait for the dvd and I thought it was pretty good, lots of actions, very good ambiance, you feel cold just watching those people running in snow killing each other. The vikings are pretty awesome, very nice costumes, mean looking, dirty. Overall a pleasant watch.
Pathfinder DVD In dts
2009-10-08 - This filmn is very dark...in color and light. It is hard to make out who is who, and what is going on. I guess I really did not care for the movie and It was difficult for me to figure out what it was about. It is in 5.1 dts and I alway's look or movies that are in dts..the sound is so good. Unfortunately, the sound could not help this movie.<>L<>
