Description of The Idolmaker:
The same year Neil Diamond made a ballyhooed (through lackluster) remake of The Jazz Singer, first-time director Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentleman) created a musical biography packed with energy, verve, and style. Golden Globe winner Ray Sharkey is Vincent Vacarri, a tough, charismatic music fan who turns producer, creating stars in the halcyon days of rock and roll. Loosely based on the life of Bob Marucci, who created the Fabian and Frankie Avalon juggernauts, the story is part character study, part musical. The outstanding concert sequences are the payoff with newcomer Peter Gallagher as the Fabian-like Caesare--a great bit of casting. Brill Building songwriter Jeff Barry's song score, including a cagey final number, is a highlight, as is Joe Pantoliano (in another debut) as Vacarri's abused but loyal songwriter partner. --Doug Thomas
The Idolmaker Reviews:
The Idolmaker
2009-05-27 - This was a very enjoyable, well acted movie about the stars of the 50's rock and roll era. It was an interesting look at behind the scenes workings of making "stars" of unknowns. I would definitely recommend it.
I will always love this movie!!!
2009-03-27 - When this movie came out I was a young girl. I am 38 years old And I'm glad to say that I own this movie in dvd. I saw it again for the first time in years!! And It is still awesome! Love it always will.....
Idolmaker is a great movie
2009-01-18 - I love this movie! It came out in the 80's and my husband loved it so I got it for him for Christmas.
One of the best movies of all time... !
2008-12-16 - The performance by Peter Gallagher in this movie "The Idolmaker" will make the hair on your entire body stand on end. Even AFTER HAVING WATCHED IT 300 TIMES OR MORE you will find your fingers trembling trying to hit the "rewind to previous scene" button. I was there during the filming of this movie and I will never forget the exhilarating emotions I felt when I saw Peter Gallagher come out on stage to perform the song "Baby" (I just want to take you where I'm go-in." They filmed the Paul Land concert before this one and I was so excited that I could not stop crying during the 2 weeks of filming this concert. There was no need for me to use the ammonia salts that were provided to make it look like I was crying, because I REALLY WAS CRYING! Then when I saw Peter Gallagher come out on the stage the first time, I was thinking; "What, I had no idea that HE was one of the actors in the movie." I remember hanging out with his "stand in" for quite a number of days during the shooting of the previous scene and I had no idea who Peter Gallagher was. I was "Awestruck" when I heard the awesome music (by Jeff Barry) and I felt as though my heart was going to pound right through my thoracic cavity. I still to this day have not EVER SEEN A SEXIER HUMAN WALK THIS EARTH. (yes, I am still hoping to one day see him again in person) I will FOREVER CHERISH my memories of the days at the Fox Wilshire Theatre. Even if you don't watch the entire movie, the concert scenes by Peter Gallagher make it worth the purchase. The others with my beloved Paul Land are to be cherished as well, however, the enormity of the other two will leave you breathless and yearn to live in the past forever! I was looking to purchase this movie for many, many years, twenty eight years to be exact and am so happy that I found it FINALLY on the Amazon website. I will forever be loyal to Amazon for selling this video. Thank You, Your loyal customer.

Great older movie, good music!
2008-03-28 - I remember watching this with my sisters growing up! It's a good story with good music. Maybe not oscar-worthy, but a fun watch nonetheless.
