Aeroplane Pt. 1 Reviews:
Upbeat song with dark lyrics
2008-10-14 - I've enjoyed this song since the OHM disk came out in 1995. I thought Dave Navarro brought a more hard-rocking attack to RHCP on this disk, although this apparently didn't work so well for the band. Oh well, John cleaned up and came back...but that's another story.
This song has a great hook for the chorus, upbeat singing, propulsive beat, excellent guitar work and of course Flea's awesome funk slap bass complete with a little solo in the middle of the song. It's a great song to turn up in the car.
What concerns me is that the lyrics contain not-so-thinly veiled references..."pleasure spiked with pain...", "songbird sweet and sour Jane...", "push her voice inside of me, I'm overcoming gravity..." and more. It's not so much the lyrics themselves, which work well with the song but that they had children singing on this song. Call me a square but although I like the song I think it was inappropriate.
Two versions of this single...
2005-09-28 - A word of warning, there are two "Aeroplane" singles out there, a regular one and a limited edition one, I'll review them both here and hopefully you can pull apart which is which when looking at Amazon listings.
The title track itself is common on both (clearly) and was the third single from "One Hot Minute". It's a catchy piece with a nice clean tone main riff and a catchy chorus, although I think by and large it doesn't succeed as well as much of "One Hot Minute", it's a decent enough piece.
The regular edition adds three live tracks-- "Backwoods", "Transcending" and "Me and My Friends". The limited edition has a holographic jewel case (yeah, kind of hokey) that allows simulated motion by shaking the thing and two live tracks-- "Suck My Kiss" and a cover of David Bowie's "Suffragette City".
These CDs both paint a pretty compelling portrait of the Dave Navarro-era Chili Peppers-- Navarro drives the band explosively-- "Suck My Kiss" turns into a guitar workout, he meanders into "Hey Joe" briefly before "Transcending", and by and large all the pieces are guitar-driven. It really is quite a different portrait from the band with Frusciante or Slovak.
All in all, both of these are worth digging up-- the limited edition is pretty hard to find, but the "Suffragette City" cover alone is worth the effort. Recommended.
a brief history of red hot chili pepper's guitarists
2004-02-07 - to explai nto the first reviewer: the 'distinctive guitar' isn't there because its a different guitarist than on any other red hot chili peppers abum. the red hot chili peppers , in fact, have had many guitarists recorded on albums...heres the order or red hot chili peppers guitarist:
Red Hot Chili Peppers-Hillel Slovak
Freaky Styley-Hillel Slovak
Uplift Mofo Party Plan-HIllel Slovak (Hillel OD'd and the 18 year old John Frusciante was brought in to fill the spot.
Mother's Milk-John Frusciante
Blood Sugar Sex Magik-John Frusciante (John slowly started hating the way he sounded live and left the band. HE would spend the next 5 years injecting heroin multiple times a day and was extremely lucky to survive. He then cleaned up his act and came bac kto the band in 1997 for californication.0
One Hot Minute-Dave Navarro
Californication-John Frusciante
By The Way-John Frusciante
and those are just the gutarists on recorded albums....they ahve had 2 or 3 other touring guitarists they used when hillel died and when john left the band. Dave Navarro brought a new style of guitar palying and song writing to RHCP, giving them a completely different tone. Traces of flea's brilliance are still found in Oe Hot Minute in songs like Aeroplane, and no, that is not anthony singing in "Pea", that is in fact Flea. Although one of the greatest songwritiers of our time- John Frusciante, was not on One Hot Minute, it is still a great album...i would recommend buying the single for Aeroplane as opposed to the album unless you like a heavier more, really, just rock as opposed to that great blende of funk and rock found on blood sugar sex magik. You know what...buy that one instead ...go get Blood Sugar Sex Magik instead of this-it is well worth your money-i guarentee it. Blood Sugar Sex Magik could very well be one of the greatest albums ever made. And the story behind it is even greater....
Great Chili Peppers song
2002-12-21 - This is an excellent Red Hot Chili Peppers song.
Are you reading this review right now? Good for you.
2000-12-22 - I am not a great fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers but I must say that Aeroplane is a really good song. What I look for in my music is a way to relate to it. The chorus goes, "And music is my Aeroplane. It's my Aeroplane." Isn't that like the perfect way to start the chorus? Other songs by Red Hot Chili Peppers that are popular are: Scar Tissue, Parallel Universe, Purple Stain, Californication, It's Right On Time, Otherside, and I'm probably missing a lot more. Don't take my word on it. Try listening to it. As Tony the Tiger would say, "They're GRRRRRRREAT!"
