Editorial Review:
First Single from their 2002 Album of the Same Title. It 'employs the Polyrhythmic Sex-funk of Old, Albeit Tempered by a Keen Melodic Sensibility and Even the Odd Cheesy Vocoder Effect.'...per Peter Murphy of Hotpress. This One Rocks Hard with a Churning Beat that Fits Beautifully on the Dancefloor Amazingly Well, While Remaining True to the Rhcp Die Hard Signature Sound. Includes the NON-LP Cover of the Classic 'teenager in Love' and a Live Version of Funkadelic's 'what is Soul'.
By the Way Reviews:
Fantastic.
2005-09-29 - Another one of those two-part singles, this particular single (title track and leadoff single from the album "By the Way") contains the title track backed by two non-album b-sides, both covers-- a studio reading of Dion and the Belmont's "Teenager in Love" and a live one of Funkadelic's "What is Soul".
Interested parties are advised to be careful-- there are two formations of the two parts of these singles-- if you're looking for all four b-sides, make sure you get a matching set.
So things have changed with the Peppers, and in many ways, "By the Way" is sort of a culmination of the band's career-- a chorus of clean tone guitars washed in vocal harmonies and a funky, slap-bass driven distorted verse mingle to put together just a fantastic song.
The b-sides here really stand out: "Teenager in Love" is fantastic-- who would've thought ten years ago that the Peppers had this in them? A relatively straight cover, with John Frusciante providing harmony vocals and Anthony Kiedis intoning the lyrics with more bite than anyone his age should be able to, it just works, and it works great. "What Is Soul?" lets the Chili Peppers sink way deep into the groove of the piece and Anthony Kiedis makes up his own verse true to the original before opening into a frantic jam.
Invariably, this is likely to draw quite a bit of criticism, doing a cover of an early '60s pop ballad when you used to be a band that ran around with a sock on and nothing else, but people change and good bands grow, and certainly this one did. Both tracks on this one are fantastic. Highly Recommended.
Great Studio B-sides
2003-07-08 - This single has 2 studio tracks on it that are really good. The first one, "Time" is a good funky song but the standout is their cover of the old fifties song "Teenager in Love". Further exploring their love of doo-wop that is all over the new album By the Way, "Teenager in Love" is a great gem and one of the best cover songs that the Peppers have done. It's up there with "Search and Destroy", "Higher Ground", and "Subterraean Homesick Blues". Loaded with John's back up harmonies the song swings with acoustic swagger, you can almost see the smiles on their faces as they play it. I'd buy this one for that song alone.
