By the Way 1 Track Listing:
1. By The Way
2. Search & Destroy (Live)
3. What Is Soul (Live)
Editorial Review:
First Single from their 2002 Album of the Same Title. It 'employs the Polyrhythmic Sex-funk of Old, Albeit Tempered by a Keen Melodic Sensibility and Even the Odd Cheesy Vocoder Effect.'...per Peter Murphy of Hotpress. This One Rocks Hard with a Churning Beat that Fits Beautifully on the Dancefloor Amazingly Well, While Remaining True to the Rhcp Die Hard Signature Sound. Includes the NON-LP Track 'time' and a Live Cover of Iggy and the Stooges 'search and Destroy'.
By the Way 1 Reviews:
A Great Listen.
2006-07-31 - By The Way (The first single off of their ground-breaking album By The Way) is a fast paced, no-nonsense number that goes through harsh, abrasive times, and calm, sedate moods. The verses are rapped in Kiedis' old, BSSM type of style. When thrusting itself through the chorus, however, one can hear a divulging of harmonic masterpieces of simplicity and excellence. Being a generally "rougher" track, By The Way is somewhat out of place on the album, apart from a few other songs that keep true to their roots in funk and rap.
This single is paired with two delightful songs: "Time" and "Teenager in Love".
"Time" is a slow, exhausted song that can feel stretched. You continuously wait for it to finish, and end up skipping it. It's a beautiful piece, but it drags on far too long.
"Teenager in Love", though, is a defined, faultless ballad that reminds me of a Beach Boys' tune. The Chili Peppers have surely matured into more sophisticated and musically adept musician, and "Teenager in Love" proves this.
All in all, the entire thing is worth listening to.
Worth digging up for the live version of "Search and Destroy".
2005-09-29 - Another one of those two-part singles, this particular single (title track and leadoff single from the album "By the Way") contains the title track backed by two non-album b-sides, "Time", and a live cover of the Stooges' "Search and Destroy".
Interested parties are advised to be careful-- there are two formations of the two parts of these singles-- if you're looking for all four b-sides, make sure you get a matching set.
So things have changed with the Peppers, and in many ways, "By the Way" is sort of a culmination of the band's career-- a chorus of clean tone guitars washed in vocal harmonies and a funky, slap-bass driven distorted verse mingle to put together just a fantastic song.
The b-sides are a mixed batch-- "Time" is kind of dull, it's a mid-tempo piece with arpeggiated guitars on the chorus, but it just doesn't seem to work at all, but "Search and Destroy" is something else-- the Peppers bristle with a live energy and explosiveness, doing a relatively straight punk reading of the piece before opening up into a spectacular extended jam.
but "Teenager in Love" is fantastic-- who would've thought ten years ago that the Peppers had this in them? A relatively straight cover, with John Frusciante providing harmony vocals and Anthony Kiedis intoning the lyrics with more bite than anyone his age should be able to, it just works, and it works great.
Invariably, the band's new sound is likely to draw criticism, but old and new fans alike will find something to like on this one.
Worth A Buy
2004-01-19 - First let me say that this CD does not have search ad destroy and what is soul. It has Time and Teenager in Love. Time is a really great song, and is also on the Japanese release of By The Way. Teenager in Love is a cover of a song that sounds like the beachboys (not sure)but thatis the style of it.
The single to get if there ever was a single to get...
2003-01-17 - The important thing about this single is the song Search and Destroy. ANYONE who calls themselves a chili peppers fan must listen to the live version of this amazing song by Iggy Pop, one of the best RHCP covers (right up there with Higher Ground) they only get better at preforming and improvising with time. This track could almost be two completely seperate songs because of the 9 minute outro. Yes...NINE MINUTES!!! If you are into Flea, John and Chad jamming without too much of Anthonys vocals (except for the first three minutes where is sings the actual song) then buy this now. You will not be dissappointed I gaurentee it. In addition it also includes Time (the amazon.com tracklising is wrong, and so is the link, if you click on search and destroy you wont hear the actual song) which is a great, funky...almost Discoish song, as well as the beautiful but rocking single...By The Way. A great album track, a funky cool b-side and the best live chili peppers track ever recorded...this is the only single youll ever need.
