Road Trippin Pt.1 Reviews:
Messy, Flawed, and Lack of b-sides.
2006-07-31 - Although there are several variations to this single, each one making it less and less listenable and significant, Road Trippin' is a beautiful track that comes off crisp and clean. Without any form of percussion, it soars melodically and freely, giving us a new feeling that the Chili Peppers have not yet provided. The lyrics are paired flawlessly with the guitar, which is played with utter perfection. A real gem among rocks.
As always, the live performances of the Chili Peppers are always amazing and never lacking in love, energy, and awe. "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", a song rarely played on a live set, is great, and giving off simply over-the-top perfection. "Californication" has been played better numerous times, making this version rather disappointing. It feels rushed, and with a lack of energy from Kiedis, you're left with the bare-bone song that doesn't fend too well among other renditions.
Considering there is an all inclusive single out there, one with these songs and more, this particular version's a dud.
Marketing dream-- find the all-in-one import.
2005-09-29 - Oh man, what a mess. Let me see if I can pull this apart-- "Road Trippin'", fifth single from "Californication", never saw release in the US. Overseas, it saw release as either a great single with four live tracks or as three (!) parts, each with different material on them.
This is part 1, backed by live versions "Californication" and "Blood Sugar Sex Magick" and with a video for "Road Trippin'". Both live tracks also appear on part 3.
The title track is superb-- an acoustic affair with no drum track, fantastic finger picked guitars, overdubbed strings, and a lovely vocal harmony, it's the kind of thing you can't believe that the Chili Peppers would do.
I have to admit, I'm not altogether pleased with the live take of "Californication"-- it seems to come a bit unhinged, losing some of the subtlety. "Blood Sugar Sex Magick" fares somewhat better, bristling with an energy that perhaps the studio version was lacking.
Still, it's not worth getting this one-- dig up the all in one single, there's quite a bit more value in that.
Road Trippin' Pt 1 = Pile of Stinky Doo Doo
2002-07-03 - Don't get me wrong, I love RHCP, but this single is just a steaming pile. The album version is great, its been one of my favourite RHCP songs ever since i got into them in 1999 with their fantastic "Californication." But the single is just not worth what you have to pay. Aside from the album version, the live songs are terrible. They sound like old bootlegs that somebody contributed; Anthony's vocals are terrible in these versions. I got a deal on my copy...
