Zephyr Song 2 Reviews:
BEWARE BUYERS AND SELLERS!!
2009-06-11 - If you're looking at this review, it is most likely you're familiar with the title track, The Zephyr Song, but are more interested in picking up the b-sides. If this is the case, keep in mind that this is a two-part release on two different singles. Total b-sides: 4 - Body of Water, Someone, Out of Range and Rivers of Avalon.
Unfortunately, when these two singles were printed, the b-sides got mixed up and DO NOT MATCH the CD inserts. Therefore Part 1 lists Body of Water and Someone but the matching CD actually contains Out of Range and Rivers of Avalon. This is reversed with Part 2, listing Out of Range and Rivers of Avalon, but actually contains Body of Water and Someone.
For song hunters I recommend both to anyone interested in completed their Red Hot Chili Peppers b-sides from By The Way.
Body of Water is a high energy rock song, far more rock than funk. Sounds like the recording is a little tweaked with some digital distortion, but it's not overly displeasing.
Someone is a much softer song, almost a Chili Peppers lullaby, very pretty, slow with minimal drums and heavy guitar delays.
Out of Range has a slower funk/rock sound, really awesome key changes and guitar licks on breaks and fills.
Rivers of Avalon is another fast paced rock song with lush vocals and bright background melodies.
Great songs, just make sure you know which you're buying. The songs can be found on mp3 and torrent sites, but the best quality you'll find is from these singles. Good luck and make sure you know what you're getting (and sellers, make sure you know what you're selling).
Good.
2006-07-31 - The Zephyr Song is a magically moving piece that comes across as pop-rock, psychedelic gem. Personally, it comes off with a little too much glamour; however this is resolved when paired with its hard, intricate guitar solos and riffs. John Frusciante's vocal harmonies intertwine majestically with the tempo and feel of the song. This is the first version of the Single, complete with "Out of Range" and "Rivers of Avalon"
The second track, "Out of Range" is another breezy, in your face 70's song that transports you to another time dimension. "Rivers of Avalon", however, is a beautifully polished ecstasy of pure mind-blowing bliss. It's one of the greater b-side songs yet. It is definitely the treasure of this bunch; one should cherish this dearly.
Recommended.
Not as good as the other "Zephyr Song" single.
2005-09-30 - "The Zephyr Song" was the second single of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "By the Way", and like the other singles from the album was released in two parts. Each contains two studio b-sides, in the case of this release "Out of Range" and "Rivers of Avalon" (note that this CD may be identified by the placement of the band name ABOVE the song title).
The title track is a breezy pop song, truthfully one I'm not overly fond of-- I actually quite enjoyed many pieces on "By the Way", but this one lacked any real bite to it.
Both b-sides are quite oddities in the Chili Peppers catalog-- they've got this sort of '70s arena rock vibe to them, complete with organ lines. Neither are superb, but both are certainly worth a listen.
2 Great Studio B-sides
2003-07-08 - 2 songs that didn't make the final By the Way album are here for the insatiable fan to hear. "Out of Range" is great with Flea doing a little fretless work on the beginning and a bit of trumpet work in the solo for those of you who miss his trumpet work. Anthony's lyrics on the chorus are great "I don't want too much more than/Than to be reborn in the morning". John's solo is on an organ instead of a guitar and blends nicely with Flea's trumpet and his backup vocals are here as well. The other song on this disc is "Rivers of Avalon" which is great as well. John's backup vocals on the song are fabulous on the chorus. The song is fast paced and intense. There's some nice organ/keyboard textures on the song as well. A must have cd for anyone that loves the By the Way album. These songs could give anything on that record a run for it's money!!
great b-sides!
2002-10-28 - the entire "by the way" album is incredible. but the 2 unreleased b-sides on this cd (out of range & rivers of avalon) are worth getting the single for. both songs are comparable to the other songs on btw, as well as songs from californication. rivers of avalon is my personal favorite b-side from this album to date, but since there should be many more coming soon, that might change. i suggest getting the full album "by the way," both versions of the first single "by the way," both versions of this single, and any more singles that come out. they recorded about 30 songs for this album, so there are plenty of great b-sides to come!
