  • Editorial Review:
Singer. Rebel. Outlaw. Hero. With his driving freight-train chords, steel-eyed intensity and a voice as dark as the night, the legendary "Man in Black" revolutionized music—and forged his legacy as a genuine American icon. Golden Globe winners Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon star (and sing) as Johnny Cash and June Carter in this inspiring true story of one man’s unwavering devotion to his sound, his message and the greatest love of his life.

    Description of Walk the Line:
A solid and entertaining biopic, Walk the Line works less as a movie than an actors' showcase for its stars. Joaquin Phoenix's total immersion into the skin of singer Johnny Cash is startling--watching it, you can't believe this is the same guy who whined about being "vexed" in Gladiator. As he evolves from a farm boy to gospel croonin' plunker to the Man in Black, Phoenix disappears into Cash's deep baritone, his way of slinging the guitar onto his back, and his hunched-up style of strumming. But it's more than just picking up mannerisms: Phoenix also sings as Johnny Cash, and it's quite impressive.

The story of how Johnny Cash became Johnny Cash traces from his childhood under a distant father (Robert Patrick) to his early attempts at a music career, during which he married his girlfriend Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin). During a tour with the likes of Elvis (Tyler Hilton) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Waylon Malloy Payne), he encounters singer June Carter (Reese Witherspoon), and his love for her--and her rejection of him through the years--spurs him into drugs, drinking, and depression. As with most movies based on real-life singers, as his popularity grows, the women come a-flockin', and the childhood demons surface. Witherspoon, who matches Phoenix drawl for drawl, plays June both as a sassy spitfire whose charm breaks your heart, and as a sympathetic friend who tries to help Cash get over--well, her. The love story is what endures, but the movie comes most alive during its musical numbers, and even if you're not a country fan, it may just get you to run out and buy a Johnny Cash album.--Ellen A. Kim

    Walk the Line Reviews:
    Great Movie. 5 Star Review
2009-11-29 - I already have this movie and have enjoyed it since it came out on DVD. This was a gift for a friend that kept borrowing mine. Enjoy. When I first saw this movie, I thought the music was dubbed in, but it was not. If you are a Cash fan you will enjoy it. If you just like a good story that happens to be true, you should probably enjoy it too. Since I grew up with Johnny Cash, I thought I know his story, but there was more.

Walk Easy, Johnny 1 Star Review
    2009-11-22 - This is a movie about a devil-worshipping woman-hating man,
named Johnny Cash...The movie begins by speaking of the death
of his brother, Jack, in a saw mill: He got cut in half. And you have
to wonder if this singer, had something to do with his death...Sam
Philips started Sun Records. And then walked in Elvis Presley,
Johnny Cash, and others. No, he did not send them a letter of
invitation. They just walked in. Is that witchcraft, or is that of God?

In this movie, Cash plays a song, Cocaine Blues, about a guy who
murders a woman, before prisoners. Was not the blood of an innocent
boy shed in that saw mill? These prisoners are not Jack. Do not
show sympathy for the devil: He is a liar and a murderer...More
horrifying than that RAP song (RAP is one letter a way from a word
meaning "to violate"), is the fact that June Carter is seen standing
    only a few feet away.

A ring, a line,...That might remind you of a saw blade, perhaps?
Johnny Cash spoke of heavenly things, but in a disrespectful manner.
I guess that is why he is going to burn in hell, for a very long time, as
in, forever. A line can curve, can it not?...Some have been warning
many, that country music is full of satanic lyrics...But I think it is the
misogyny and hatred of people of colour that gives them away.

Why would Cash choose to live in a log cabin? Why be reminded of
Jack's death? Why did he not abhor the bloodshed? Why did all that
wood not make him faint?...As he leaves for the army, he hears on
the radio about General Douglas MacArthur AND his troops, fighting
Koreans, but Cash is stationed in post-war Germany, with very little
to do, but write. He has escaped bloodshed twice, as if by design:
The saw mill accident, and the Korean War...Elvis Presley was also
stationed in Germany, after WW2 had ended. Maybe Sam Philips
knew somebody? The prince of this world is the evil one, and some
choose to make the evil one, their ruler.

Or maybe it is like that movie, Field of Dreams. "If you build a
recording studio, they will come, and play some music"...There is a
CD with the early Sun Recordings of Elvis Presley. In the background
of one one of the singles, you can hear somebody saying, "N**ger".
Makes a person long for fire from Heaven...By revelation given unto
me by the Lord Jesus Christ: The First Man was black, and the First
Woman was white. But I have nothing to do with these "church
organizations", only the Believers trapped within, being held prisoners.

There is a scene in this movie, in the midst of the song 'Jackson' they
are singing, Reese Witherspoon's character, squints with her eyes, and
upon her face is an upside-down grin, as if to say to the audience, "You
see this "hunt her, gather her"...Pity me". But she has learned not to
expect pity from them. For "they" either like this "slop" fit for pigs, or
"they" condemn her, for questioning "their pastor". I wish I had not seen
this movie. Reminds me of episodes of 'Family Guy' on TV. Some
scenes may be funny, but if you don't "change the channel", you'll be
    sorry.

That said, Joachim and Reese, sound better than Cash and Carter.
That is astounding. Makes you wonder, How is it that soo much
talent goes unnoticed? And why does Reese keep playing these
women? First 'American Psycho', and now this. Unbelievable.
What's next? A landscape architect? More sharp tools, perhaps?
Oops, lost my ring finger, again...Now, where oh where, did I put the
    duct tape?...I NEED a doctor...And a "guarding her" (gardner).

Frankly, this movie might make you feel like walking into a 'honky tonk',
or unto a university campus, or a shopping mall, or even the DMV, holding
a picture of Jack Cash (after the accident) and asking the question, "Have you
    seen this boy?"

    Great film 4 Star Review
2009-11-14 - This film pretty acutatly displays cash's life . Both phenix and witherspoon play their parts well . The only complaint I have is that the film doesn't cover cash's entire life .

    OKAY. 3 Star Review
2009-10-18 - Dvd was not in spectacular shape. Price was great, but had some scratches and freezes in some spots. Wasn't very happy with this buy, expected it to be in better shape. But overall the price was wonderful and shipping was fast.

VHS review of Walk The Line 4 Star Review
2009-09-10 - I wasn't a Johney Cash fan prior to seeing the movie. I did however enjoy the his music and the revelations of his personality and his life within the context of his biography. Reese Witherspoon did an excellent job in playing,June Carter, his devoted and pricipled wife and lover. At times I felt that , at times,Joaquin Philips over dramatized Cash's movements. All in all a very entertaining and informative story about an interesting and talented personality.
