  • Editorial Review:
Between his directorial duties on A Perfect World and The Bridges of Madison County, Clint Eastwood starred in this pulse-racing 1993 thriller. In the Line of Fire was directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the brilliant director of the World War II U-boat masterpiece Das Boot. Eastwood gives one of his best performances as Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, who still feels responsible for the death of JFK 30 years earlier. Horrigan gets a shot at redemption when challenged by a psychotic but highly intelligent assassin (John Malkovich) who intends to kill the current U.S. president. Tension builds as this intellectual cat-and-mouse game reaches its climactic confrontation, but not before we've seen the killer at work, covering his trail with ruthless precision. Tightly scripted by Jeff Maguire, the film cuts Malkovich loose as one of the most memorable screen villains of the 1990s, and costars Rene Russo as Eastwood's sharp Secret Service colleague and romantic partner. --Jeff Shannon

In the Line of Fire 5 Star Review
2009-10-18 - I never have any problems when I buy from amazon directly I get all my stuff and in a timely maner. The supersavers shipping is great as well because for a few dollars more you can get another product instead of paying for SH&H. I live on a Marine Corp base in Japan and not only do they have a smaller selection then what I can find for dvd's especialy Blu-reys. They are so much cheaper here on amazon as well. This product was brand new and works great, plus an excelent movie with a great plot and acting. A must own for any Clint or Thriller fan.

Eastwood Playing Eastwood 3 Star Review
2009-09-29 - "In the Line of Fire" (1993) is a fairly good thriller that will hold your interest. In his later movies Clint Eastwood seems to be specializing in playing older men who are out-of-shape, defying authority, trying to prove something to themselves and others, and who are flawed as people ( a guilt-ridden creaking geezer). In this outing he's a Secret Service agent who still feels guilty about being part of the Kennedy security detail that day in Dallas. Now, thirty years later, he's back in the presidential protective detail trying to trot alongside the limousine and barely making it.
The president's chief of staff hates him because he keeps calling wolf and getting in the way. He's in conflict with one of his fellow agents. He and Agent Rene Russo are bonding though. The Secret Service boss (actor John Mahoney, he of Frazier fame) backs him until there are screw-ups.
An assassin (John Malkovich) is gunning for the Prez and keeping in contact with Eastwood, teasing and taunting him with his schemes. He's one mean psychopath.
I saw the movie previously and remembered it as well-done, but this time it came off rather half-baked and didn't wow me as it had the first time. Perhaps like Eastwood I'm getting old and jaded. Like the movie stars of the old days, Eastwood always seems to be playing Eastwood no matter what name he goes by in the script.

A fantastic suspense epic 5 Star Review
2009-09-13 - John Malkovich is superb as a psychotic killer bent on killing the president. Clint Eastwood is great as a has-been secret service agent determined to defend the president. A film full of suspense and surprises.

This film has it all! A true five-star classic 5 Star Review
2009-09-06 - This is a superb film in which Clint Eastwood is perfectly cast as the (fictional) Secret Service agent who was closest to John F. Kennedy on the day of his assassination. Thirty years later Eastwood is nearing retirement, and has never lived down his failure to protect the President on that day. Now, a trained killer has announced his intention to take out the current President, and Eastwood is obsessed with preventing this, thereby expunging, or at least absolving himself, for his earlier failure.

This film really does have it all. Eastwood superbly carries off his assigned role. The rest of the cast is similarly excellent (Fred Thompson is great as the President's Chief of Staff.) The somewhat intricate story is put together carefully, and realistically, and this is done so clearly that the viewer never loses track of what is going on. Every scene contributes to the eventual climax of the film. No spoilers here. This film combines just the right combination of intrigue, character development, plot development, and action -- plenty of action. The storyline never drags and this film carries the viewer along to its conclusion brilliantly.

This was a perfect vehicle for Clint Eastwood to show off his considerable talent. Highly recommended. RJB.

    First-rate Eastwood 5 Star Review
2009-05-15 - This will become a classic. Clint delivers an excellent performance. Good drama/thriller/suspense flick. Malkavich plays an excellent villain. It's a definite must-watch, especially in Blu-Ray format. The video resolution details are just amazing. Enjoy.
