Editorial Review:
The stars of Unfaithful rekindle their screen chemistry in this rich tale of hearts awakenings based on a bestseller by Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook, Message in a Bottle). Richard Gere is Paul, a surgeon who long ago unwittingly traded career for family. Diane Lane is Adrienne, a devoted mother trying to move on after her husbands infidelity and struggling with his desire to return to their marriage. At a remote inn on the Outer Banks, Paul and Adrienne expect to do some serious soul-searching. But an approaching storm forces each to turn to the other for strength, setting the stage for a life-resonating romance.
Description of Nights in Rodanthe:
The sparks between Richard Gere and Diane Lane--so memorable in Unfaithful--smolder again in the sweepingly romantic Nights in Rodanthe. Based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, the film is unapologetically sentimental, and enjoyable completely on its own terms--a small gem of an escape, complete with storm-tossed coastline. Lane plays Adrienne, a wronged wife whose husband (Christopher Meloni) was a heel, but begs for another chance. She goes to clear her head at a remote North Carolina inn, where the sole occupant is Paul, a doctor, played by Gere, who is battling his own demons. If the writing is on the wall about what will become of our two leading actors, it's to Lane's and Gere's deep credit that they make their tentative connection, wariness, and growing feelings human and quite believable. Love is messy, and grownup love, even more so. As they get to know each other, Adrienne shows Paul a small wooden box that holds her keepsakes: "I made it to keep special things safe." Paul turns to her, looking her squarely but gently in the eye, and says, "What keeps you safe?" At that moment, every woman watching the film is in the palm of his hand. The film squarely addresses the reality that people over age 25 do, in fact, yearn for, and find, love. If only more studios would realize the deep, appreciative audience for films like this. --A.T. Nights in Rodanthe Reviews:
Rancid
2009-11-25 - Knew where this one was going in the first 5 minutes; the only reason I didn't bail right then & there was because my husband, who likes sappy-sentimental love stories no matter how pathetic, was into it -- and I do see that there are about as many five-star reviews for this ham-fisted assault on the old heartstrings as there are one-star(or zero stars if that were a possibility, as several have suggested). So what can I say? No accounting for taste. My personal opinion: just the worst! I've never read Nicholas Sparks; at least I can thank this movie for making sure I never will.
Why isn't James Franco listed in the credits?
2009-11-16 - I found it quite surprising and interesting that James Franco as
Dr. Fanning's son, Mark, was not listed in the credits at the end of
the movie. The credits list others who had extremely minor walk-on roles but
totally ignore Franco. How can this happen? Is it a huge oversight or
intentional for some reason? Very curious.
Wonderful romance!
2009-11-07 - Romance without being sappy. Great scenery i wish i could rent a place like this for a vacation! Great acting! These two are awesome together!
Emotionally intense
2009-11-05 - How can you lose with Richard Gere and Diane Lane? Well for me the location inaccuracies were a bit irritating, cause you don't go over the sound bridge AND take a ferry to get to Rodanthe (on Hatteras Island). AND there are no horses in that part of the Outer Banks. In addition some may find the ending unsatisfying. (Won't put the plot spoiler in here) But aside from those two things, I still have to say I LOVED it! The chemistry, the raw look at deep personal and relationship issues, the sea, sand and a charming inn...good stuff. Also the hurricane scene was overdone and not realistic either. But having been in one and experiencing first hand the strange effects it can have on you (in a hotel very close to this locale)...still found it heartpounding and powerful. So hey, get the movie and escape into a good ole tearjerking romance!
