Life Reviews:
Great Re-emergence
2006-03-20 - Ricky Martin took time off, and it was well worth it. Although the horrible stigmas will still be attached to songs like "She Bangs" (thanks to Mr. Hung), he never fails to produce great vocals and very infectious melodies. This cd is different than any other that he has produced - diverse in world sounds, and he works well with some hip-hop producers too. Highlights include "This is Good", "Drop It On Me", "I Don't Care", and "Life". Some of the ballads are pretty also, but can be reminiscent of Sound Loaded's "She's All I Ever Had". Despite people never admitting that they love "Livin La Vida Loca", Ricky Martin definitely rocks. This cd is worth it; I fell in love with it after only 1 listen-through. Plus - who wouldn't want to dance with an incredibly hot man who can shake it like that?
Great CD!
2005-12-28 - Ricky Martins best english album yet! Don't curse the CD with low ratings because of a Sony software problem, it's no fault of Ricky Martin. The software problem is non-existant on this CD anyhow.
DO NOT PLAY ON PC
2005-11-30 - This is a copy of the review on Amazon.com for Van Zant's Get Right With The Man which is another Sony corrupted title.
"This CD secretly installs DRM (digital rights management) software on your PC without your permission. Not only does it do this, but the software then hides itself by installing as a "root kit."
As per WikiPedia,
--
Root kit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A root kit is a set of tools used by an intruder after cracking a computer system. These tools can help the attacker maintain his or her access to the system and use it for malicious purposes. Root kits are known to exist for a variety of operating systems such as Linux, Solaris and versions of Microsoft Windows.
A rootkit typically hides logins, processes, files, and logs and may include software to intercept data from terminals, network connections, and the keyboard. In many sources, rootkits are counted as trojan horses.
--
In this instance, Sony installs DRM software to copy protect their CD, and prevent it from being copied to various devices, all the while not telling you, the user, or letting you uninstall it because it hides itself from the user and Windows. Manually trying to uninstall it like some people have done, results in their CD-Rom drives disappearing entirely from Windows, as Sony installs their own custom CD-Rom drivers onto the system.
DO NOT SUPPORT THIS WRECKLESS KIND OF COPY PROTECTION. SHOW THE MUSIC BUSINESS THIS IS *YOUR* MUSIC. *YOU* PURCHASED IT, AND THEY SHOULD *NOT* BE ABLE TO DICTATE HOW YOU CAN USE IT.
Do not buy this CD. "

And another part of an Amazon.com review for the Van Zant CD
"Amazon rocks. They pulled they infected CD's from sale and allowed these reviews that tell of the problems. Shame on Sony they not only messed with the consumers but also the artists."

LIFE" CD DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY SPY-WARE! Buy and enjoy the CD with confidence!,
2005-11-28 - Sony released the official list of all CDs that contain the XCP Content Protection Technology and Ricky's "Life" CD is NOT ON THE LIST!!!
Check out the list:
http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/titles.html
Quote from the Sony website :
" Note: Two titles, Ricky Martin's "Life" and Peter Gallagher's "7 Days in Memphis" were released with a content protection grid on the back of the CD packaging but XCP content protection software was not actually included on the albums."
So the CD cover is only labeled with the copy protection software notice, but the CD itself DOES NOT contain any hidden root-kits.
SO DON'T BE AFRAID TO BUY AND ENJOY RICKY'S FABULOUS NEW MUSIC!
Ricky's latest music is great - don't blame him for SONY's issues
2005-11-28 - I agree with all that has been said regarding Sony and their deplorable actions with rootkit, etc. That said, in fairness, I think the artists who are unfortunate enough to have contractual obligations to Sony, and who had cds released during this window of time should not be inked with the same foul brush as Sony itself.
This cd is wonderful; a departure and evolution for Ricky, with world sounds, collaborations with Fat Joe, Voltio, Scott Storch, Daddy Yankee and more on this cd - and if you weren't aware, Ricky Martin co-wrote many of the songs on this cd. You see a more raw and perhaps more real side of Ricky than we have seen before, particularly in "I Am" and "Drop It On Me." I usually skip tracks 3 & 4 - "I Don't Care" was released too far in advance of "Life" and I got tired of it before I heard the rest of the cd. I prefer most any remix of IDC to the album version, and Diane Warren's "Stop Time Tonight" is IMO the weakest track on the cd. I especially LOVE "This is Good," ""I Won't Desert You," and "Dejate Llevar" (the Spanish version of "It's Alright"). Those that liked the remix of "Cambia le Piel" (from the Sound Loaded cd) that was on pLATINum Rhythms will recognize drummer and co-writer Danny's Lopez's style on this cd as well.
As with Sound Loaded and continuing with Almas del Silencio, there are too many layers of sound to fully appreciate when played on your computer, or anything less than a system with good speakers cranked up to a decent volume - or right in your ears with good-quality ear/headphones.
Download the cd from iTunes (you get a bonus track that way), or send your cd back to Sony - supposedly they'll send you a replacement in 6-8 weeks, but don't miss the music on this cd! Sadly, for big fans, the dual disc version which was supposed to have been released has been indefinitely post-poned. Sony only added to fans ire with that announcement. I hope they DO release the thing - I have had issues with them for years regarding their marketing strategy with remixes/singles released all over the world with different versions - and the only way to get them on eBay or from DJs or expensive collector sites, not even through Sony, his official website, or even the world Amazons, etc.
If you haven't listened to Ricky since Livin' la Vida Loca or Shake Your Bonbon - give him another listen. It's like that was an entirely different "LIFE" from the new release.
