Editorial Review:
With A Girl Like Me, the Barbadian teen-queen Rihanna is looking to transfer all claims of royalty to the summertime pop charts. If anybody's going to rule them, she pretty much proclaims by way of "SOS," a song no less irresistible, intoxicating, and all-out cool than 2005's "Pon de Replay," off her debut, she's it. That's not to say this new disc is anything like its predecessor overall. Where Music of the Sun was mostly what its title suggests--a romp through an anglo-friendly island with no sunscreen required--A Girl Like Me is more reflective and a little rueful; you get the sense it was crafted in part to show her range, with executive producer Jay-Z guiding her through it gracefully. "Unfaithful" is a noir-ish testing of the R&B waters, and it goes so well that Rihanna wastes no time skinny-dipping her way into the deep end--"Final Goodbye," "P.S. (I'm Still Not Over You)," and "A Million Miles Away" all betray juicy bits of Beyonce. Back in barefoot bikini-girl land, though--a territory that covers roughly half this disc--the party's still going strong. Rihanna gives dancehall legend Sean Paul a run for his money with the bouncing "Break It Off," and "We Ride" makes you want to roll down the windows and stick your head out the passenger side. Crank it up and keep the sunglasses handy. --Tammy La Gorce

A Girl Like Me Reviews:
Music Of the Sun pt. 2 4 Star Review
2009-11-26 - A Girl Like Me is a continuation of Music of the Sun with Rnb and Reggae songs. This time there are more ballads. After listening to this album and music of the sun, i would say that the music and the lyrics have improved. yet, i stil feel that her voice is not strong enough to sing ballads like unfaithful. she sounds out of pitch at times. she sounds better singing dance, uptempo songs like sos and break it off. overall, i still think this album is good and worth listening to despite some flaws.

TOP 5:

1) SOS-the song that really stands out. it has an 80s sample of soft cell's tainted love.
2) Break It Off-her and sean paul sound hot together. it's a great dancehall song.
3) P.S. (I'm Still Not Over You)-it's really nice and laidback. she sounds good here. sounds almost babyface influenced
4) Selfish Girl-i love the reggae beats in this song. it hits closer to home and my jamaican roots.
5) Kisses Don't Lie-it's a reggae song with a little guitar thrown in.

Honorable Mention: Unfaithful-one of the few nice ballads on the album even though her vocals are not perfect.

Never liked this album when it came out! 2 Star Review
2009-03-21 - I personally liked her first album when it came out. I thought it was catchy, poppy, and was fun to listen to. The only reason she really got popular was because she was smart and expanded herself catering to a more "White" audience. Especially with the unfaithful video. When this came out I thought there were way way too many carbon copies that out there and to me this seemed really medieocure. Even compared to Beyonce(and i was getting tired of her). Unfaithful was ok. I don't really think she can sing that well, well at least ballads shes got more of a pop voice(which is ok). My favorite track was Kisses Don't Lie, I actually think she'd be a better rock singer then pop/r&b singer. This track is a hidden gem and really shows that she's got some talent. I also loved SOS when it came out. i thought the video was fresh, the song was hot, and it had great beats. The rest of this cd and much of her career seems like kind of lackluster for me. She's really not that good to me, and alittle young for me. Even though were the same age. It just seems like she caters to the nickoledeon crowd to much!

HER BEST CD! 5 Star Review
2009-01-01 - This is my favorite CD from rihanna! I listened to it and really couldn't stop! Its better then good girl gone bad! Music of the sun is a 5 star CD but this one is beyond 5 its more like a 10 star CD! i was very impressed! You have to have this if you are a fan of rihanna! i mean it! Its worth what ever you pay, really!

Playful, but unfulfilling 3 Star Review
2008-10-04 - It's playful, but a bit unfulfilling.

SOS is fun, playful, though I found it very annoying. It's redundant, moreso than it needs to be. It does not progress. It's also childish. Kisses Don't Lie starts off like a sing song type tune. It progresses quite well and is more mature than SOS. It is still able to be considered fun, though being more soulful. It seems like it would be easy to dance to with a catchy hook.

Unfaithful is both beautiful and sad. The lyrical content is lovely, a bit poetic, but some people seem to take the murderer lines a little too seriously. The background is also gorgeous. It's easy to see why this song was a single. It is beautifully symbolic and very mature. We Ride is very interesting, but the background clashes with her voice and makes it difficult to listen to. Perhaps a different background would have been more appropriate. It reminded me of Destiny's Child, only it seemed to be more childish.

Dem Haters had kind of an island feel, which made it fun. It was bland in some spots, though, but overall was a pretty good song. Final Goodbye, on the other hand, was a very pretty song, but was very sad. It almost seemed like it could be a funeral song, except some might think it was inappropriate to play a Rihanna song at a funeral. It was very solemn, and beautifully written.

Break it Off had some more of the island feel, which made it more danceable. It was kind of juvenile, though. Crazy Little Thing Called Love also had the same feel that Dem Haters and Break it Off had, and seemed appropriate for teens falling love, but not grown ups.

Selfish Girl continued the island feel. It was an interesting sound, but her voice was too whiny in the song. She sounds like a spoiled brat, instead of a selfish girl. It sounds like something a five year old could have come up with. PS (I'm Still Not Over You) has a bit of the sing song tone to it, but it's a better song than some of the stuff on her album. It is, unfortunately, too quickly paced for the content, and seems like something you'd find on the back half of a Britney Spears album. It's cute, but it definitely could have been better.

A Girl Like Me starts beautifully, but quickly it becomes obvious that it's going to get worse as it goes on. When the tempo picks up, it seems completely out of place in terms of what a good song is supposed to sound like. Just too quick to be good, and makes her seem like she's in a rush. A Million Miles Away starts lovely and sounds romantic to someone not paying close enough attention, but is a bit sad when you begin to look into the deeper meaning of the words. She showcases her voice quite well. My only complaint is her enunciation on some of the words. If It's Lovin' That You Want - Part Two is another dance song. It has a bit of a bitter and unfulfilling beginning. It gets a little better. The lyrics are a bit childish and a little annoying.

The album is okay. Nothing too special, but the ballads are awesome. It's a little boring, but much of it is childish. It sounds like it was written for kids, but marketed to adults. I don't know if I'd recommend it.
