Editorial Review:
As the lead singer to the multi-platinum group matchbox 20, Rob Thomas penned a remarkable string of chart-topping hits. Rob has also collaborated with a select list of artists-most notably Santana, for whom he wrote and sang the smash pop single, "Smooth," which earned Thomas three Grammy Awards.
Description of Something to Be:
It's common knowledge that solo albums are simply an excuse for a frustrated band member to indulge their experimental sides and Rob Thomas, singer for decidedly M.O.R. multiplatinum rockers Matchbox Twenty is not one to pass on the opportunity. Having already explored the classic rock thing through his collaborations with Mick Jagger and Santana, Thomas goes the other way here with results that are unexpected, and, sometimes totally unbelievable. He veers from modern R&B on the Justin Timberlake-aping "Lonely No More" to vintage prog-rock in "All That I Am," touching on all points in between. There are a few nods to the Matchbox canon with "Ever the Same" and "This Is How a Heart Breaks" but, as the title suggests, this is an album about finding himself. For the moment, Thomas is still searching. The DualDisc portion features 5.1 surround sound, a 20-minute documentary on the making of the album by filmmaker Gillian Grisman, plus the holiday tune, "Christmas in New York." --Aidin Vaziri
Something to Be Reviews:
Rob Thomas Something To Be
2009-09-22 - Debut solo album isn't much different from MB20 but I like them better as a band.
You Will Not Be Alone
2009-08-10 - "Something to Be" may be the perfect pop record. From the pounding drum on the opener "This Is How a Heart Breaks," the album takes off. "I Am An Illusion" has a haunting lyric of searing self-assessment that throbs to a luscious beat. The theme of the unhappy man continues on the raging title tune, "Play another one of those heart break songs; Tell another story of how things go wrong & they never get back; My pain is a platinum stack." The slower "All That I Am" is a strikingly lovely song, "And I breathe where you breathe, Let me stand where you stand." "Streetcorner Symphony" seems to finally rise from the troubled tracks into joy, "My sisters & my brothers of every different color, can't you feel that sunshine telling you to hold tight, things will be alright." The CD concludes with "Now Comes the Night" with Thomas' piano making the track seem like a hymn, "And when the day has all but ended & our echo starts to fade, No you will not be alone then & you will not be afraid." "Something To Be" is a tremendous set that touches the darkness & the light within us all. Enjoy!
Fantastic music that everyone can enjoy!
2009-07-01 - Something to be is the first solo cd from the ever talented Rob Thomas. The songs on this cd are a great mix of sounds and lyrics that can make you want to get up and shake it or just sit and relax with a glass of wine. This cd is fun and poetic. There's definitely something for everyone on this cd, and I would highly recommend you give it a listen! You will not be dissappointed.
Great Music
2009-06-12 - Bought the music CD for my wife, she's a big fan of Rob Thomas and really liked this compilation of his songs.
It was indeed better than I expected
2009-03-17 - Well I was not sure I should buy something I had no idea the condition it was in. I took the chance though and it was better than I expected. If anyone else is looking forward to buying something but not sure, I would suggest they go right ahead. I can almost guarantee they will not regret it.
