VOYAGE OF THE CAPRICORN LADY BOOK TWO The Shadow of His Smile Voyage of the Capricorn Lady, Book Two, The Shadow Of His Smile, continues the true story about a Caribbean Charter yacht couple, Captain Judith Gilman and her husband, Captain Dan T. Gilman III. After they lost their business and almost all their personal possessions in central Florida, they sailed away on an aging wooden sailboat, finding a new life in the Crewed Charter Industry in the Virgin Islands.

The first book, Voyage of the Capricorn Lady, Book One, Lost at Sea with Daniel T., recounts Dan and Judi’s miraculous escape from almost certain death after a boating accident in the lower Bahamas, and chronicles the challenging and adventurous life they stumbled into that would provide a new career for the next 23 years.

After they sold their sailboat, Capricorn, in 1980, they became the new owners of a 71’ Trumpy Houseboat, built in 1947. From 1980 until 1999, Dan and Judi Gilman owned and operated Capricorn Lady in the British Virgin Islands, hosting Oscar winners, film directors, royals, and families from around the world. The vessel, and her owners, was featured in many international yachting and travel magazines, and was one of the first motor vessels to do crewed charters in the Virgin Islands. Dan and Judi purchased another smaller Trumpy, Capricorn Mistress in 1985 to join the Lady at her Nanny Cay base, often running the two vessels in tandem to provide accommodations for large family reunions, and corporate charters. Licensed Captain, First Mate, and Master Chef, Judi, a Capricorn Lady, tells "all" with a sense of humor and obvious love for the life she shared with Captain Dan. Tales of charter guests, charter crews, colorful island characters, beloved friends, and life in the beautiful British Virgins, are spiced with the memories of years of hard work and accomplishment. Judi describes what life was really like, "below decks", on her successful charter yacht, as she and her husband strived to provide luxurious cruises for their guests, aboard a classic wooden yacht.

Judi embarked on her voyage of love and adventure with Dan in 1964, and during their life together, they shared many tests of their ability to adapt to new circumstances. Never separated, working together 24 hours a day, they were loved and admired by their charter guests, but failed to heal the wounds caused by their abrupt departure from their previous life. Two families suffered the pain of separation, never sailing across distant horizons to reach the shores of forgiveness. This phase of the Capricorn Lady’s journey culminated with Dan’s death from Lung Cancer in April 2003, after a fierce two-year battle for survival. Travel with Judi from the carefree golden sands of the Caribbean to the Cancer Centers in Oregon where Dan stood his final watch. Judi’s beloved Captain departed "across the bar" in Florence, Oregon, leaving her in a world far from the sunny islands of the Caribbean. Learning to cope without her beloved soul mate, while transitioning to a new and interesting life, is her new challenge for the future. Dreams and psychic occurrences during Judi’s life, and after Dan’s death, confirm the bonds of love that bind this Capricorn Lady and her Captain, "Forever". The Capricorn Lady’s Voyage will continue "Somewhere Beyond the Sea".

Voyage Of The Capricorn Lady: The Shadow Of His Smile- Book II Reviews:
What an Adventure! 5 Star Review
2008-12-14 - My wife and I read both books shortly after they were published. We actually bought them at The Captain's Lady book store in Florence and met Judi. If you want a real "armchair adventure" then you'll enjoy them individually or as a set. If you ever dreamed of a life on the sea they are the next best thing to being there. The books tell of the life of two soul mates meeting, losing almost everything and starting over again by running a charter business in the Caribbean. A true love story together with it's joys and sorrows. Highly recommended.

Voyage Of The Capricorn Lady Book II 5 Star Review
2008-08-13 - While on our first real "adventure" after 34 years of marriage, we wound up at a condo in Florence, OR.
My husband wasn't well, so we only walked a little in Old Florence, supper at Waterfront Depot and retired for the evening.
With no TV to watch, I looked for a magazine or book to browse through.
I picked up Capricorn Lady II and didn't want to set in down.
After I read about Florence, Eugene and Captain Dan being sick, I started to read passages to my husband.
Here we were in that very town, on an adventure like no other and "my captain" not well. I read until I couldn't anymore, I wanted to know their whole story.
Even though we are "land lovers", we still had so much in common with the author and her Captain.
The strength, courage and endurance Judith showed, time after time, helped me to deal with a sick husband a long way from home.
Capricorn Lady II was a blessing when I really needed a friend.
Once home, I found Voyage of the Capricorn Lady Book I, to read.....the rest of their story.

THE CAPRICORN LADY SAILS AGAIN 5 Star Review
2006-03-02 - Sail along with Dan and Judi and the Lady in the second book of their life as they charter the best sailboat and motor yacht in the BVI. You can almost smell the briny sea and taste Judi's gourmet meals as page after page unfolds a story of life on the ocean and the people they encounter. After reading Judi's story, I felt a strong bond with her and now know why I admired her so much when chartering. Her books are a pure delight.

A review of both Books 1 and 2 5 Star Review
2006-01-11 - The Voyage of The Capricorn Lady is a voyage anyone can take without leaving your living room. From the moment I began reading, I understood that Judi was not only sharing with us a wonderful part of her life, but developing a bittersweet peace within herself as she wrote. She writes simply and beautifully as she takes us on a voyage of success, failure, and success, peppered with the determination and self doubt we all experience. As we come to know Judi and Dan, we can relate to their difficult choices, and we can rejoice in their happiness.

Throughout this journey, we are confident that Dan and Judi's business savvy, and devotion to family and each other will inspire them through their most difficult times.
These books are not only a tribute to a man by his wife, but a true to life experience of living a dream laced with laughter, danger, and above all love...

Ginger 5 Star Review
2005-12-15 - This is a true story of a man and a woman destined to meet and share a life of adventure, laughter, tragedy and love. From their first lunch together in 1964, to their last embrace in April 2003, Daniel Gilman and Judith Bauer epitomized the term "soul mates".
Book one takes us on their journey from the world of high level real estate, through an abrupt departure on their 40' sail boat Capricorn and finally to the Caribbean. The agony of leaving family and possessions behind is gradually softened by their new lives, new friends and a grand new world.
Through a tapestry of defeats and accomplishments, Judi takes us with her on a cruise through her most cherished years with her "Danny" by her side. We experience their hartache and their hard earned victories. As we sail with them on the Capricorn from island to island to the acquisition of their motor yacht, Capricorn Lady, we eat, swim, dive, and tour their stunningly beautiful yet at times unforgiving part of the world.

Judi's vivid and deeply personal account of their life together leaves the reader with an enticing anticipation for book two. These books are just not for those who shared the experience of a cruise with Dan and Judi. It is for the romantic, the gourmet, and the adventurer in all of us.
