  • Editorial Review:
This classic HBO documentary features reenactments of actual letters written by soldiers during the Vietnam war. In each case, a famous celebrity voice (Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Robin Williams, and others) reads the letters to us.

Description of Dear America - Letters Home from Vietnam:
All the confusion, pain, despair, and even hope of the men and women who served in Vietnam is captured in Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam. Read by dozens of actors such as Harvey Keitel, Matt Dillon, and Kathleen Turner, these letters show a more human story of the war than we see in most media outlets and reveal real people in real situations trying to explain or understand. The footage, some newsreel, some shot by the servicemen and servicewomen, reveals a tension between the soldiers' actual experiences and the presentation their loved ones received from television. The soundtrack weaves the songs of the 1960s with the readings to create a compelling aural snapshot of the time, which complements the video exceptionally well. While it's not a "feel-good" movie, the viewer does get a sense of the indestructibility of human dreams. --Rob Lightner

Dear America - Letters Home from Vietnam Reviews:
    Fabulous! 5 Star Review
2009-11-06 - Great use of words, images, and music to help illustrate the change in attitude of the American public on the subject of our involvement in the war in Vietnam. Takes us from sending in "advisors" in 1960, to the Tet Offensive in 1968, to the Fall of Saigon in 1975, to the Vietnam Memorial in the early 1980s. -- Simply the best!

    This is a 10 5 Star Review
2009-10-21 - This is a must have movie. Use your surround sound system and jam this movie. It will blow you away.
The music along with the spoken letters of the men and women who were on the line will leave chills
running through your body. No matter how you think and feel about the war in Vietnam, you will remember this movie forever.

Dear America-Letters Home from Vietnam 5 Star Review
    2009-10-07 -

This documentary is one of a few that show us how it truly was during that time period.I would recomend it highly.

    Vietnam Movie 5 Star Review
2009-06-15 - This is a great film which goes through the whole Vietnam conflict. It hits the highlights of the conflict with the use of letters from the soldiers, music, and real film footage. My students find this movie to be powerful even though it is one of the last topics that is discussed in class for the year. There are some swear words (I always warn the kids in advance) but in the context of the letters the students understand why they are there. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants a good overview of Vietnam.

Great Vietnam War Movie 5 Star Review
2009-06-12 - A great movie for teaching the Vietnam War. It includes music from the time and does a great job of honoring those who fought in Vietnam. It could be considered a little biased against the war, but most people today probably hold the same opinion.
