Description of Lonesome Dove (2-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]:
Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker
Lonesome Dove (2-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] Reviews:
Lonesome Dove greater than ever
2009-12-30 - We've always thought this was a fantastic western since we first saw it on TV a long time ago. On wide-screen DVD it's even better. I think Robert Duvall once said it was his favorite role, and when you watch it you have to say it was his best role. With one or two exceptions (like Blue Duck and Claire) the casting is excellent. Amazon ordering and delivery was first class as usual.
Great Western - Blue Ray Transfer can be improved
2009-12-23 - This review is for the Blue Ray transfer. In general the picture quality is passible to good comparing to a DVD. It is certainly not up to the Blue Ray standard. The problem is with the evening scenes. The picture quality is poor and full of snowy artifacts all over the screen worse than a poor quality DVD. It can be distracting at times. Fortunately most of the evening scenes are short. It is a disappointment. However; I would still buy the disc for the movie. It is a great captivating mini-series. The movie deserves a 5 star rating. The 3 1/2 - 4 star rating is for the disk.
Warning: Incomplete, Missing Key Scenes
2009-11-30 - Blu-Ray is awsome. Lonesome Dove is awsome. But this Blu-Ray version is missing key scenes. The scenes that I noticed are: The last scene of disc one is the Irish boy being bitten by snakes. The second disc opens not with him dying but with "Deets" (Danny Glover) dead with no expaination. Also key to the story is the hanging of Robert Urich's character which is not seen at all. I don't know what else is missing. Maybe a third dvd??
Finally Lonesome Dove in HD
2009-11-24 - This is the way this movie was shot. It was released in theaters overseas, so the aspect ration was probably 1:6/1. This is great. Unfortunately, the sound still is pretty thin. The dialogue can be so mid-rangey that it is hard to understand. Best western there is next to The Searchers.
What a great Show!
2009-11-23 - We already had Lonesome Dove on DVD , but I couldn't resist buying it as my first Blue Ray movie. Its just amazing in wide screen and the definition is, well, WOW!!
I loved the new interviews as well, definitely worth the money
