  • Editorial Review:
Packed with epic action, OPEN RANGE is a powerfully gripping story that's never been told until now, and stars Academy Award(R) winners Robert Duvall (1983 Best Actor, TENDER MERCIES) and Kevin Costner (1991 Best Director, DANCES WITH WOLVES), and Academy Award(R) nominee Annette Bening (1999 Best Actress, AMERICAN BEAUTY). A group of free grazers, four men trying to escape their past, are driving cattle and living off the land on the open range -- a place where nature makes the only laws. When a ruthless, evil rancher tries to run them out of town, the men's peaceful existence takes a tumultuous turn and ends in the grittiest, most explosive gunfight on film as two men battle a town for honor, justice, and a way of life that's quickly disappearing.

    Description of Open Range:
Released almost exactly 11 years after Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Kevin Costner's Open Range proved yet again that the Western is the classic American genre. While it lacks the thematic impact of Eastwood's masterpiece, Costner's first film since 1997's ill-fated The Postman returns the actor/director of Dances With Wolves to the open prairies of America--in this case the free-range frontier of 1882--where legal "free-grazing" cattle drives were falling prey to empire-building land-owners. In the wake of territorial murder, free-grazing cowboys Boss (Robert Duvall) and Charley (Costner) seek vengeful justice against the ruthless rancher (Michael Gambon) who threatens their law-abiding survival. A feisty ally (the late Michael Jeter, in his next-to-final film role) and a doctor's sister (Annette Bening) offer support during climactic shootouts, masterfully staged with the shock and suddenness of real-life gunfire. Rich in character development and thick-hided humor, this handsome production redeemed Costner's directorial career with a well-told story (by Craig Storper, based on Lauran Paine's novel The Open Range Men), flawless performances, and stunning Canadian locations. --Jeff Shannon

    Open Range Reviews:
WOW! A tribute to the golden age of westerns. 5 Star Review
2008-09-15 - This is by far one of the top 10 of all western movies. I rank it with The Searchers, Shane, High Noon. A cinematic treat from somber start to the explosive yet tender end. Eat your heart out OK Corral. This is what is missing from so many modern movies. A story that is told without the F word every 5 seconds, no mindless sex, no graphic gore. Just an old fashioned western story about the struggle between right and wrong, good and bad, and the road to redemption. Keep it coming Mr. Costner.

    Good Western 4 Star Review
2008-08-29 - Good movie with Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner, it has to be good. Quality and entertaining drama

A 'must have' for your library 5 Star Review
2008-07-20 - Costner and Duvall do a great acting job with this storyline and have a great supporting cast. If you have to even get it used, get it. It's a great 'modern day' made western of classic proportions.

Kevin & Co. come up with a winner 4 Star Review
2008-07-14 - After a series of flops, artistically and commercially, Kevin Costner returned to the genre that first brought him success: the Western. The best decision he ever made as director/producer was to highlight Robert Duvall in the lead role since he's one of the few actors who look comfortable in Western garb, the other 2 being Clint Eastwood & Tom Selleck. But it's Duvall's authority and grace which really contribute to making this Western such a success for Costner. Also he skillfully cast such fine actors in supporting roles such as the great Irish/British actor Michael Gambon as the villain and the late Michael Jeter in his last role as an ally of Duvall & Costner. The plot of course is simple yet it really doesn't matter here because Costner, unlike Lawrence Kasdan, takes his time in developing every character in the story so that by the end of the finale after the gunsmoke clears--we really care for all of them. In "Silverado", we get types but here in "Open Range", we get full blooded characters. And of course, even the always excellent Annette Benning has a role worthy of her talents-as a progressive middle aged woman who clearly stands on her own. There is a slight nod in "The Unforgiven"'s direction in Costner's damaged gunfighter but overall when the gunfight occurs--we're really rooting for these two veteran cowpunchers. Duvall said in an interview that of all the character roles he's played none is more comfortable than that of a cowboy--and he certainly looks like he's born in the saddle (he once boasted that he rode better than John Wayne when he was in "True Grit"). This is one Western I'll be looking forward to in Blu-ray!!
