Description of True Grit (Special Collector's Edition):
A wonderful/rueful running gag in El Dorado involves the Edgar Allan Poe line "Ride, boldly ride" being mangled by toupee-wearer Wayne into "Ride, baldy, ride." Two years later, in True Grit, Wayne put the joke in italics by donning an eyepatch and several inches of girth to play cantankerous territorial marshal Rooster Cogburn. Critics belatedly noticed that he could be a marvelously entertaining actor, and Hollywood finally gave him the Oscar they'd failed to nominate him for in Red River, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, et al. But make no mistake: True Grit is a splendid movie, with lovingly textured storytelling and sturdy characters, Henry Hathaway's finest high-country action set-pieces, intoxicatingly ornate frontier language, and a couple of formidable bad guys (Jeff Corey's Tom Cheney and Robert Duvall's "Lucky" Ned Pepper). It's a compliment to say that, from a technical standpoint, the movie could have been made any time in Hathaway's 40-year career, yet its feeling for the reality of violence ceded no ground to The Wild Bunch, released around the same time. Still, the film's most sublime passage falls between bursts of gunplay: Rooster sitting on a hilltop at night recounting his life story, as John Wayne metamorphoses ineluctably into W.C. Fields. --Richard T. Jameson

True Grit (Special Collector's Edition) Reviews:
"... come see a fat old man." 5 Star Review
    2009-11-21 - TRUE GRIT
Pinnacle of the late Duke period. I've heard the Coen Brothers are planning a remake with Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, while the principles sound great, improving on the original seems like a tall order.

John Wayne was born to play Rooster Cogburn. The direction, scenery and writing sparkle in the original. Strother Martin's horse trader is perfect, how can they possibly recreate his reading of the line about a child falling in a well?

Atypical of John Wayne movies is the ambiguity between good and evil. Rooster Cogburn is taken to task (although it comes off sympathetically) for his homicidal approach to law enforcement. He's portrayed as selfish and totally capable of letting down those who depend on him. Robert Duvall's portrayal of Lucky Ned Pepper ranges from cold blooded opportunist (escape at the dugout) to killer with a conscience when he demands that Tom Cheney release Mattie Ross.

The only flaw in the movie is the casting of Glenn Campbell as LaBouef. His "big bore Sharps" can't inflict near the damage of his line readings. In spite that minor criticism this one of John Wayne's best roles.

    Christmas 2009 5 Star Review
2009-11-09 - I got this movie for a family member for this coming Christmas. I myself am not a big John Wayne fan so anyhow I myself have not seen this movie.

    Family Favorite 5 Star Review
2009-10-02 - I saw this movie for the first time at the drive-in with my father when I was five, he is a real big John Wayne fan. He wanted me to see it because he wanted me to see that women can be strong too, and that even as a young girl this will show and if some people act like they don't like it they really do admire the trait.

This is an excellent family film and you will be surprised at some of the big name stars who are also in the film, Dennis Hopper has a small but memmorable part, and Robert Duvall plays one of the main bad guys in the film.

If you want a movie for a family night (even small children will find something to love)this is a great choice.

    THAT'S A MOVIE 5 Star Review
2009-08-10 - THE BEST THE DUKE HAS TO OFFER. THIS MOVIE BROUGHT THE BEST OF JOHN WAYNE AND GLEN CAMPBELL ALL IN ONE MOVIE. THIS MOVIE DEPICTS THE THE TYPE OF MEN THAT BUILT AMERICA; A REAL TREAT IN ACTION AND ACTING. KIM DARBY IS TOWERING IN HER PORTRAYAL OF AN DETERMINED AND SPIRITED YOUNG WOMAN AND ROBERT DUVALL IS SUPERB IN THE BRIEF PART HE PLAYS AS NED PEPPER. THE CINEMETOGRAPHY IN THIS WESTERN IS REAL AND BREATHTAKING.

    A Classic 5 Star Review
2009-08-09 - Yet another classic film by the all American actor John Wayne. The beautiful Colorado scenery, the thesbian genuis of Wayne (and his fellow protagonists),and the incredible plot of a young girl's search for her father's murderer makes True Grit one film that John Wayne fans cannot afford to live without.
