  • Editorial Review:
A reworking of Mike Hodges' "Get Carter" with an American setting and a black cast. A professional killer returns home to avenge his brother's death. A big rubout is the key to this violent crime story. From the novel "Jack's Return Home" by Ted Lewis.

    Hit Man Reviews:
By the numbers Blaxploitation flick. 3 Star Review
2009-01-30 - Hit Man(1972) is one of the lesser Blaxploitation films of the early seventies, bringing nothing new to the table about a man who's niece is murdered, which causes him to hunt and kill EVERYBODY involved.
Bernie Casey is hardly the presence that Richard Roundtree or Ron O Neal was in Shaft(1971) and Superfly(1972) and the film does not even have the humor or hard-hitting nature of the genre's best films.
Still, there's lots of violence and nudity, and Pam Grier is in it and shows off her amazing figure better than in any of her other films.
Her nude scenes are the number one reason to check out this flick, all other followers of Trash cinema may want to skip this one.

A classic of any generation! 4 Star Review
2008-07-03 - This is one of my favorites! Bernie Casey delivers one of the few believeable performances of that time as THE brother you didnt want to mess with. He exudes a confidence that comes with having done work on the streets and knows how to handle himself. Tyrone Tackett is a man attempting to deal with the death of his brother who quickly finds out there is foul play involved and will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of it and make those responsible pay. This movie is a great contrast to Shaft because of the west coast style Bernie brings to the role, check out his rap, and when someone gets him pissed he puts out some classic lines "us Tacketts dont like being pushed into the ground" and "I done seen all you heavy LA cats and I AINT IMPRESSED". GET THIS MOVIE and watch Tyrone anger and fury build following the treachery put on his family until it explodes. Trust me the only other real portrayal of this character is by Richard Roundtree in SHAFT, Denzel Washington in TRAINING DAY and Samuel Jackson in SHAFT. These characters are based on real life men who you dont want to get on the wrong side of if your smart (many of these brothers worked and lived in our communitties some as police officers, some like my Dad in the post office. Theso called Blaxploitation genre was built around these characters starting with SweetbackBadass Song and the Shaft movies and quickly fell apart with bad acting, casting and writing.

The Review That Will Die a Lonely Death 3 Star Review
2007-08-18 - I hate the term blaxploitation to describe the African-American action films of the Seventies. These were action films that empowered African American actors and gave them a forum which they otherwise wouldn't have been afforded. Enough of the soap box. This re-working of "Get Carter", one of the true underrated classics of cinema that I will champion to the grave, is pretty much a paint-by-numbers affair. It sticks close to the story but with an Afro twist. Bernie Casey is more than adequate in the Michael Caine role. Fans of Pam Grier may be disappointed unless you want to see her natural attributes on display because she has an incidental part here. I was expecting a little more artistry here because the director and screenwriter here is George Armitage who later made the minor gems "Miami Blues" and "Grosse Pointe Blank". Not bad but could have been so much better.

Bernie Casey at his best! 5 Star Review
2007-07-23 - This was probably Bernie Casey's best film as an actor and he has been in some good ones. This was also one of Pam Grier's early movies before Foxy Brown and Coffy. This movie was straight up gangsta. It's also one of those lost 70's classics that is very difficult to find and if you're lucky enough to come across it, you'd better keep it locked away in your archives. I'm glad i got a hold of it.

    Hit Man 4 Star Review
2007-02-21 - I just wanted to say that this movie was everything that I thought it would be. I have been trying to get a copy of this movie for 10 years and no one could seem to help. I just want to say thanks and I am having a ball with this movie. I am a Bernie Casey fan!!!!!!!! The quality of the movie was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!
