Editorial Review:
Rediscover some of TV's favorite western heroes in this action packed collection, including The Lone Ranger, The Rifleman, Bat Masterson, The Range Rider, Cisco Kid and many more.
Included:
1. Adventures of Champion, The
Life in the American Southwest during the 1880's would be a dream come true for a boy like Ricky North (Barry Curtis). Living on his Uncle Sandy's ranch, Ricky had exciting adventures everyday that he shared with Champion, the Wonder Horse and his dog Rebel. This fan-favorite western from the 1950s brought to you these exciting adventures every week right into you home!
2. Bat Masterson
This 1950s western featured a non-traditional western hero. Gene Barry starred as Bat Masterson, a gambler and lady's man, who traveled across the West with a bowler instead of a cowboy hat and used a cane for his primary weapon instead of a six-gun. This unorthodox fighting style kept his opponents at bay and him on top of his game in this series based upon the actual story of William Barclay "Bat" Masterson.
3. Cisco Kid, The
This classic western series was the first to be filmed in color, even though the majority of television sets in the country were black and white. The show presented the tales of The Cisco Kid (Duncan Renaldo) and his trusty sidekick Pancho (Leo Carrillo) as they traveled about the West, coming to the aid of those in need of it. One of the most interesting aspects about this program is the fact the main characters were Hispanic and presented in a positive manner, making it unique since most programming on television at the time featured Caucasian performers presenting shows geared toward a Caucasian audience.
4. Death Valley Days
This long-running classic western series featured tales from the area surrounding Death Valley, California. Check out these exciting adventures brought to you through stories narrated by The Old Ranger (Stanley Andrews).
5. Lone Ranger, The (TV)
This classic radio show was brought to television in the late 1940's and was a favorite of children and adults alike. Starring Clayton Moore as the masked man and Jay Silverheels as the faithful sidekick Tonto. The story concerns a Texas Ranger who was the only survivor of an ambush and is nursed back to health by his friend, Tonto. After his recovery from his injuries, the Ranger decides to dedicate his life to bring justice and peace to the West. Using the benefits from a secret silver mine, the Lone Ranger rides the West on his horse, Silver, and dispenses justice in the form of his trademark, the silver bullet.
6. Range Rider, The
This classic television series from the early 1950s starred Jock Mahoney as The Range Rider, who traveled the west bringing aid and justice to those he encountered. Aiding the Range Rider in his efforts was Dick West (Dickie Jones), the All-American Boy who was a top-notch rider as well as quick on the draw.
7. Rifleman, The
Chuck Connors portrayed Lucas McCain, New Mexico rancher and the fastest shot around with his Winchester rifle. McCain is a widower raising his son Mark on his own but he aides the local sheriff, with his Winchester, in keeping the peace near the town of North Fork.
8. Roy Rogers Show, The
Travel back to those early days of television to the Double R Ranch, where you will find America's favorite singing cowboy Roy Rogers. Re-live the exciting adventures of Roy, his horse Trigger and his faithful dog Bullet, as they work their ranch with the lovely Dale Evans and her horse Buttermilk. Don't forget trusty Pat Brady and his jeep Nellybelle, who were always up for fun and adventure with Roy and Dale.
TV Westerns 57 Episodes Collection Reviews:
western oldies are great
2009-09-29 - This DVD is wonderful! I hesitated after reading some reviews that mentioned problems, but so far the few we've watched are fine. Also the person who took time to list each one is to be commended! I printed it so now is easy to mark off the ones we watch. Otherwise it is confusing to keep up with which ones have been viewed.
great TV western collection
2009-04-05 - This is the 3rd order of this collection of westerns for myself and friends. Some are better than others, content wise, but quality of these DVD's are great. If you like the Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid and the early 1950's TV westerns, this is for you.
57 Western Episodes of Public Domain Goodness
2008-07-05 - TV Westerns Collection is a compilation of 57 episodes from 8 different Western TV shows from the days when Hollywood knew how to make great Westerns on both the big and small screens. I paid $9.99 for my set and considering that you can pay $5 and higher for just 4 episodes of one of these shows, you cannot complain about the price. The reason why you can get so many episodes for such a low price is that all of these shows are in the public domain. The quality of the prints used in this collection vary, but overall you will get a fairly decent picture on your screen.
The really great thing about this collection is that it is not limited to the usual suspects, that is shows such as Cisco Kid, Lone Ranger, The Rifleman & The Roy Rogers Show that are quite easy to find and obtain. The collection also includes such shows as Adventures of Champion, Bat Masterson, Death Valley Days and The Range Rider that are harder to find.
Samples of some of the old classics and some obscure
2008-03-23 - My first frustration was not knowing what episodes are included in the set. On opening the packaging, I was disappointed to see that it is on 4 double-sided discs so there are no directory labels on the discs. Also, the disc id's are on the very small hub rings. Don't bother to check the Mill Creek website for episode contents either.
So, I tediously inserted each DVD and review the menus (flipping for each side) and what do I find... the side B's on two of them won't play in my best DVD player - Incompatible Disc!!
I swapped to a lesser quality DVD player and they play okay. However, the quality of the recordings is really sub-standard. The back of the case says "Digitally Re-Master on 4 DVD's". Take my word for it. Nothing about these recording is remastered!! The recording quality is inconsistant, some are nearly un-watchable, either too light, too dark, or too contrasty which can can make these old Black & white episodes look like they were record off the last TV (syndicated) broadcast airing of of very old worn film.
Having said all this, it's kind of funny, they look just like I remember them! So, there you go. I haven't had enough time to watch all of them, but then I wasn't a fan of all of these series, only a few of them.
Finally, there appears to be no rhyme or reason in the selection and sequence of the episodes, but for those that care, here is what I found.
