Rolling Stone Cover to Cover: The First 40 Years Reviews: Can't go wrong 2009-10-06 - Great content deserves great delivery and this certainly delivers. Easy to use, it is both entertaining and a fantastic resource at a remarkable price.
Reliable Seller 2009-07-30 - Item as described, shipped promptly, great price, too. Can't wait to download, but it is a gift for my 14-year-old nephew so I'll have to wait until after his birthday!
All the Rolling Stone you ever wanted to have... but were too young to be able to get it. 2009-07-06 - To be honest I didn't know that this set even existed until last month. I've been a huge Bob Dylan collector for more than 5 years now and since I've finished completing his discography both on CDs and vinyls and I'm also almost done with all the available bootleg shows, I thought to myself: why not start on magazines? There were a lot of fanzines, like The Telegraph, ISIS, etc... and there's this Rolling Stone, which is a legendary magazine itself. I wanted to try to dig out all those RS that had Dylan on cover - or inside. Knew it's going to be 1) almost impossible to do, 2) probably I can't afford it even if I find all those ooooold issues. BUT why not give it a try. I bought a few RS on British E-bay and was looking for more here on Amazon. Didn't find too many, but I came across this set. Checked what this is about and was like WOOWW! A 200+ beautifully published book and 3 dvds consisting of each and every Rolling Stone page from its beginnings to the 40th anniversary. And all that for less than[...]! Plus a free subscription coupon!! (I live outside the US so I can't use it, but I sent it as a gift to a friend in Texas). So here I was, ordering this set to Poland for just 65 bucks including shipping. It arrived in a nice bag about 10 days later. Installed it on my computer and started strolling through those historical pages. Someone did a really great job! And it must have been hard work at the same time, imagine scanning every single page out of around 1000 issues. Ok, maybe not that bad as we already live in a digital era, but surely the earlier issues have been scanned page by page, as there surely hasn't been any digital vault for them. It even looks vintage - first issues are a little yellowish, those scans I mean. Of course it would take a lifetime to go through all of them, but it's not the point. Rolling Stone has a kind of a special place in the US history and culture, so it's really great to have a chance to have it all on your shelve. Especially if you're 26 like me and just physically didn't have a chance to be ordering them when they were being released back in the Sixties. The set has got an easy to follow menu, so actually you can search any article / artist / topic you need in just a matter of seconds. It comes in a very good-looking box and is a really great addition to your book shelve. I'd really recommend it to anybody who's into the American music and culture... especially for that amount of money!! Hey, doesn't it mean that after all, a treasure can cost a bargain?!?!
Hey, Columbia and your deluxe 3 CD Tell Tale Signs for [...] - why don't you take a good example here, huh????
Such a Great Set 2009-06-06 - I passed on this when it first came out because I was skeptical of how well the software would perform, and I didn't want to pay $100 to find out the hard way. Now that the price has come down, I made the purchase. The verdict: Excellent set, and the software works well (and quickly).
I have yet to scratch the surface of what's here, and I've already been thoroughly entertained.
The sheer amount of content makes it worth the price several times over. Especially if you're a pop culture junkie (like me), or have an interest in the history of popular music, American culture, politics, TV, film, or technology (check out early articles explaining how to buy the right VCR and explaining this curious new gadget called a compact disc player). The photographs are sometimes brutally candid, sometimes breathtakingly staged, but always worth a glance.
You've got early writings from the likes of Lester Bangs, Hunter Thompson, Cameron Crowe and PJ O'Rourke. You'll bump into things you never would have known to look for, such as future MTV personality Kurt Loder's gushing review of Prince's "Purple Rain" album or the 1983 feature story ripping the new cable channel MTV for selling out rock and roll, and for having the nerve to turn music into something you can watch.
There are charts of the best-selling albums and hottest singles at that time. Countless reviews of new albums, movies and TV shows. Extensive coverage of major events like Woodstock, Live Aid, and the murder of John Lennon. Obituaries of the biggest pop culture icons from 1967-2007, ranging from Johnny Cash to Kurt Cobain to Jim Morrison to Keith Moon to John Belushi to Chris Farley.
Biting political commentary and election coverage. Glimpses of musicians and actors that were on top of the world for the briefest of stays, and have not been heard from since.
Classified ads that are often worth the price of admission by themselves, for sheer laugh-out-loud comedic value. There's an assortment of vintage advertisements: A new model of Vans sneakers marketed specifically for breakdancers in the mid-80s, or the Renault automobile, or a new movie called Ghostbusters. I could go on forever about the great content in this set... and I already have, so I'll stop here.
The collector's book that comes with this set is very nice too, but the Rolling Stone collection on three DVDs is so robust and fun to look through that it renders the book an afterthought. The Bondi reader software works fine on my three year old Dell. I never have to wait more than a few seconds for my selected content to load up, which is normal with most applications.
diappointed 2009-01-06 - I returned one of the sets. We thought it was a set of the 1st 40 years of the RollingStones music group.
