Editorial Review:
Limited Edition Japanese 17 disc (16 SHM-CDs + NTSC/Region 2 DVD) box set from the British Rock legends containing all 16 of their London Records '60s albums packaged in beautiful mini-LP reproductions plus a bonus DVD. The SHM-CDs (Super High Material CD) can be played on any audio player and deliver unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008.
Rolling Stones: Special Box Set Reviews:
Collector's dream
2009-08-13 - I'm a huge fan of the japanese paper sleeve mini vynil replica cds. They are identical to the 12" albums but cd size. This set is impressive and a huge investment. Worth every cent. All Stone's output from the 60s', including "big hits 1" and "big hits 2", the latter in it's original octogonal shape. Amazing. All replicas come in it's original art form. Beggar's Banquet is represented by both the bathroom cover and white cover with the feast photo inside. Let it bleed comes with the original poster in mini size. Satanic comes with the mini 3D photo in the front cover. Incredible how perfect it is. The sound is pristine. I don't know much about the super high material stuff. What I know is that plays perfect in my cd player. And that is what matters. Didn't have to buy a new player to hear it. If this new technology will prevail only time will be able to tell. But it works very well. This purchase made feel happy as a child. Highly recommended. 5 stars.
STONES GREATEST ALBUMS IN THE 60TIES SHM...UCK CD
2009-04-06 - I bought this set last week and was eager to listen the old Stones songs in new SHM technology and really expected improved sound in comparison to all previous releases, including the Universal DSD remasters from 2006. Now I'm disappointed with what I received; SHM technology reveals not as promised, a better and full overall sound, the mid-high and high tones are too strong and not balanced with mid-lower and low tones. Allthoug this set is nicely packed, the music lacks overall quality and it is NOT as promised by advertisements. As sound eqipment is use a Denon receiver/CD player, with optical connection to a Logitech 500Watt Z-5500 sound system. I think, it depends on what equipment the SHM CDs are used, when I put the SHM CD into a cheaper, portable sound system, the sound is slightly more clear in a cheaper, more simple player. SHM CD rises the highs and does unfortunately not improve averall sound. Straight on tones like voices, trumpet, piano do come through very well strong and clear, but guitars unfortunately, especually accoustic ones, sound thin and sometimes go under, if you consider, that Rolling Stones sound is guitar based. Drums in loud parts sound somehow messy and sometimes like compressed. I got same exprience with Page and Plant, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Stones Shine a Light SHM CD sets.
Don't Bother Folks!!
2008-12-30 - Well .... I received this today from Amazon Japan. It is a box that has the original UK sleeves with the disks in and equivalent Japanese sleeves empty. However, played side by side, I can't detect any sonic difference at all compared with the 2002 DSD remasters and, indeed, some of the CDs have identical artwork!! SH-M Shmem - Super High Material CDs - a mere marketing lure that I took!
Therefore, if you already have those 2002 DSD remasters which were urgently needed upgrades on those terrible first 1986 releases, don't bother with these ... And the Beatles remasters will come out when??? We've all waited 20 years for those!!
