Editorial Review:
Some Girls introduced a whole new generation to the music of the Stones. The infectious dance groove of Miss You topped the US charts, as did the album in 1978. Both releases also made the Top 3 in the UK, where the country-flavoured Far Away Eyes, featuring Ronnie Wood on pedal steel guitar, enjoyed substantial airplay. Respectable, the follow-up single in Britain, proved that they could match the punks they had influenced so much. The US market preferred the mid-tempo Beast of Burden which went Top Ten there. A cover of The Temptations' Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me), the driving When The Whip Comes Down, Keith Richards' vocal turn on Before They Make Me Run and the urgent Shattered - a US Top 30 single - make this a must-have album, which has already sold over 6 million copies worldwide, and still provides the group with concert highlights 30 years on. Peter Corriston's striking cover design, controversial at the time, remains a classic.
Some Girls Reviews:
Summer Memories
2009-11-04 - I remember cranking this up the summer of 78' when I graduated. I think "Shattered" was the one that got us the most. Then Lucy made them take her likeness off the cover which made the original LP cover a collectable. I have the remastered CD version from years ago that replicates the LP which slides into the open end of the plastic jeweled case. Dont know if they do it that way anymore for this one. Other Stones CD's are just LP replicas which is fine by me now that I can store them and keep the original safe on my shelf.
Some Girls Remastered 2009
2009-10-23 - One of the best Stones records, sounds even better now. The bass has more depth to it, the higher frequencies contain greater detail. This was an electrifying Stones record to begin with, most of the songs are rock and roll, with a gritty edge to it. To mix it up, they added a couple slower songs like, Far Away Eyes, which has a Country feel to it, or Miss You, which has a dance flavor to it.
Rolling Stones older music
2009-10-09 - This is a fantastic cd. All the tunes are great! A must have you love the 80s music you gotta have this one. "SOME GIRLS".
The Bad Boys Battle Back
2009-10-04 - Hey, in 2009 no one, including this reviewer, NEEDS to comment on the fact that The Rolling Stones, pound for pound, have over forty plus years earned their place as the number one band in the rock `n' roll pantheon. Still, it is interesting to listen once again to the guys when they were at the height of their musical powers (and as high, most of the time, as Georgia pines). This album from the tale end of their most creative period , moreover, unlike let us say Bob Dylan who has produced more creative work for longer, is the `golden era" of the Stone Age. While this CD has a fistful of "greatest hits" from this period some of the songs are distinctly anti-women, intentionally or not, at least the lyrics would not then, and do not today, stand the test for "political correctness". That includes "Some Girls" and "Beast Of Burden" ( a little). Nevertheless this stuff holds up pretty well, especially "The Girl With Far Away Eye".
Edgy, brittle and peaky
2009-09-16 - I gotta roll with K Stephenson on this one. The 2009 remaster of this 1978 masterpiece makes my ears bleed. I happen to own a pretty decent rig that is very detailed, so for those folks listening through mushier sounding systems, or through tubes this may not b the case. The problem I'm finding with alot of these remasters is that they're boosted in the upper midrange (1 kHz - 2kHz) and are way too hot. In my setup on this version the notes in this range jump out from the mix and are piercing. The jangly guitar lines in Just My Imagination, and Miss You render the mixes unlistenable. I dunno, I'm not sure what's needed to reverse this trend in music remastering of retooling everything so damn hot. Maybe more young women in the studio with better hearing, esp in the mid to upper frequencies, to call attention to the aural offenses. Either that, or just let Steve Hoffman remaster everything. I think the industry needs to get away from having these burned out, 60 yo tin ears reworking the classics. Save your money on this one, or just get the earlier versions.
