Description of Surrogates [Blu-ray]:
Intriguingly scaled more along the lines of a good sci-fi short story than a steroid-enhanced action picture, Surrogates proposes a variation on spectatorship-run-amok. In the near future, human beings need no longer leave their homes: mechanical surrogates, similar in appearance (but younger looking, fitter, with fewer wrinkles and more hair) can move about in the world on the user's behalf, following commands and absorbing physical wear and tear. A cop (Bruce Willis) begins investigating a mystifying case of a user who died when his surrogate got blasted by a fancy ray-gun in the street--that's a definite violation of the company guarantee. In the course of a trim, sub-90-minute running time, the Willis character himself is forced to enter the mean streets in his own flesh-and-blood version, not his surrogate, a move that puzzles both his wife (Rosamund Pike) and partner (Radha Mitchell). In the movie's scheme of perfect surrogates and digitally-smoothed faces, the grizzled humanity of Bruce Willis comes blazing through; what a relief to see a battered human in the midst of the beautiful people. Director Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3) gets the world right, but one waits in vain for a fuller picture of the effects of this surrogate population, or a deeper study of the creator (James Cromwell) of the technology, or a reason to get involved in the rebel leader (Ving Rhames in a fright wig) and his reservation populated by defiant non-surrogates. Sprinting along as it does, Surrogates doesn't find time for these presumably crucial details, and the result feels just a little skin-deep. --Robert Horton
Surrogates [Blu-ray] Reviews:
Interesting and Forseeable Sci-Fi
2009-12-17 - I love the concept of having physical avatars you can go out into the world in, have fun, do whatever, without any worry of getting hurt. That alone makes this movie brilliant. Add a murder mystery into that, with some crazy smart hacker who finds a way to hurt the real person behind their surrogate, and its game on. This movie is full of twists and hidden plots. There are plenty of got you moments and I loved Bruce Willis in this. Not his best movie, not the best movie in general, but still pretty darn good.
Surrogacy just might be closer then you think..
2009-12-05 -
For those of who are Sci-Fi buffs, 2009 has been a mixed bag. Star Trek clearly led the pack with the action, the laughs, and the nostalgia faction, and District 9, with is socio-political commentary mixed with sci fi, was right beside it. Surrogates on the other hand feels like a very good short story made into a film, but ultimatley many questions remain. In a world of this future, humans can slip out of their dreary human lives of pain, and live in perfect bodies, like a real life version of the sims where you can switch yourself up whenever you like when it is time for a change. What the film gets right is the beauty factor of such a world, where everyone will go for the hottest look that suits them, and is the total opposite of what the really look like, like that person you are chatting with over the net who you hope to god are who they say they are. In this world, all bets are off. Bruce Willis's character goes along with the life until he starts to question his sanity and his wife who has become even more attached to the surrogate. Also the very dr. who created surrogacy who now realizes what a horrible mistake he has made. This adds to Willis's character and his mega confusion. Willis always plays these roles well, it briefly reminded me of his turn in Sin City, in fact, as a sci fi noir, this might have made a hell of an impact as a film. As it is, it is a beautiful film to look at, with a fascinating look at a possible future, and a pretty muscular sound track that should give your speakers a nice work out. This is a good film, not great, and leaves you with more questions then answers. It will not make any sci-fi top 100 lists, but it is a valiant effort and has a lot to say in a world where we are only a few years off from being able to select the sex, gender, height, hair, and eye color of our children. In fact, the first designer babies of this generation are already on their way and you might not have even known it.
Surrogates may not be great, but it does a good job at what it does
2009-12-03 - The opening scene in Surrogates is something that stuck out to me, seeing as I am a sucker for faux-documentary style openings. Basically the first 10 minutes are done in a documentary style, to sort of introduce the surrogate technology and the setup of the movie. Then we leap into the conventional movie style. As good as the opening was, I also felt it was striving too hard for the realism of my favorite movie of the summer 09, District 9.
WIllis stars in the movie, and if you've read the comic book you probably know what the movie's about- this humanoid technology named Surrogates, who promote a glamorous lifestyle. However, there seems to be something fishy about these so called surrogates- a man died after his surrogate got blasted away by a ray gun. This calls Willis to solve the mystery of the Surrogates.
I will admit I rather liked the movie. It was fast paced and interesting to watch, especially with the action scenes and the suspense. Willis turns in a phenomenal acting performance, maybe his best since The Sixth Sense. The movie plot is pretty unoriginal though, which is what prevents the movie from getting anything above 3 stars. But with that aside, some great action and special effects made for an entertaining movie. 3/5.

Surrogates.....
2009-11-30 - An okay movie. It could have been better. The acting was fine but it is definitely NOT a family movie.
Bruce, you couldnt have picked a worse scrpit to read.
2009-11-29 - This was honestly one of the worst movies i have ever seen i saw this in theaters with a few buds of mine this movie made me want to put a bullet in my head. The first time i went to see it i was high off my mind. then i thought id give it another go so this time i went sober. it was still quite possiably one of the worst movies i could have ever seen. im glad that i wasted 10.50 to see everything that was in the trailer. Go watch the trailer and if your not LOVING and i mean LOVING the trailer then do not even waste your time because i promise you, you will be very disappointed. It truly a sad day when even bruce cant make this movie good. i love him in everyone of his movies and then this P.O.S comes out.
