  • Editorial Review:
Adam is not a typical romantic comedy. The death of his father leaves Adam (Hugh Dancy, Confessions of a Shopaholic) living alone in the apartment they shared. When a friendly young woman named Beth (Rose Byrne, Damages) moves into the building, Adam doesn't know how to express his attraction--he has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of high-functioning autism that prevents common human empathy. So he invites her into his apartment to experience his homemade planetarium and takes her to the park in the middle of the night to look at raccoons. Despite herself, Beth is intrigued. At first she's baffled by Adam, but when she learns the source of his awkwardness, she starts to appreciate Adam's honesty and lack of guile--particularly as family secrets start to emerge when her father (Peter Gallagher, The O.C.) is indicted for financial misdoings. Just as the nature of Asperger's Syndrome lifts Adam from the ranks of conventional romance, the committed and thoughtful performances by Dancy and Byrne keep Adam from being a disease-of-the-week movie or yet another ""mental handicap"" flick. The movie treats the problems of such a romance honestly, but also sees a kind of hope in the way these two grapple with their difficulties. Also featuring Amy Irving (Bossa Nova, Carrie). --Bret Fetzer

    Adam [Blu-ray] Reviews:
"Adam".........Awaiting the DVD Release is Agonizing 4 Star Review
2009-11-16 - Unfortunately, this nice little movie came and went in a heartbeat. It opened at the Sundance Cinemas in San Francisco, and was gone within 2 weeks. I really enjoyed it and have been anticipating the announcement of the DVD release date. I somehow thought its theatrical run was a lot longer time ago, when it has only been 4 months. Still, considering how poorly it performed at the box office, I would have hoped that the DVD would be released before the holiday season. Will it?

Incredible look into the life and struggles of Asperger's 5 Star Review
2009-11-07 - I recently saw this on a plane flight and immediately wanted to go out and buy it. This was very truthfully detailed in showing the daily life accomplishments and struggles of someone with Asperger's. From the people who don't (and/or don't want to) understand Adam [Hugh Darcy] to others like his friend Harlan [Frankie Faison](Down to Earth, In Good Company) who explains some of life's simple situations to Adam one day then helps Adam keep self-control in an excited, emotional situation.

A very good movie and one to show others who may not normally be open to seminars/training about such conditions but could easily enjoy and understand this production. Two thumbs up and 5 stars!!!!

    I have Asperger's 5 Star Review
2009-09-12 - I have Asperger's and I think that the portrayal of Asperger's in this film is wonderful. It is nice to have a movie I can relate to. Anyone who wishes to understand Asperger's better should see this film. It outranks Mozart and the Whale.

Charming and moving 4 Star Review
2009-08-26 - The movie "Adam"(2009) is directed by Max Mayer, and stars Hugh Dancy (Adam) and Rose Bryne (Beth). This is a charming, heartfelt movie that portrays a brilliant young man with aspergers who learns to come out of his shell through the love and encouragement of a woman who lives in his apartment. He shows her the planetarium in his apartment, and the raccoons living in Central Park, and she exposes him to the world of people.

Another film, "Mozart and the Whale", dealt with a couple who had aspergers, but here only Adam has the affliction, however Adam and Bev seem more likely to develop a real relationship.

This is a somewhat sombre film, but it's also humorous. The movie is as much about healing as anything, as both Bev and Adam are learning to cope with various pressures in their lives. The film opens as Adam's father has just died and he must now learn to take care of himself. Bev is learning to trust again after being in a relationship with a boyfriend who was having affairs with other women. Adam, on the other hand, is incapable of lying and she falls for this straight forward and interesting young man.

Their developing relationship movingly conveys how two people can fill in the pieces missing in each of their lives.

promising, and interesting in its plot, but flaky on the acting 3 Star Review
2009-08-26 - Hugh Dancy plays a young man with Asperger's syndrome who is forced to find himself after his father passes away. This movie is decently made, but is far inferior to the the other movies about people with the same condition, particularly Mozart and the Whale. Dancy's portrayal of an Aspie feels strained at times - it's almost as if he watched the other movies to see how the actors played the characters inflicted with it, rather than going out and researching the condition, its symptoms, and maybe meeting people who were affected by it. Yet, the story of the one man's struggle with the condition and a woman's struggle to have a relationship with him is an intriguing concept and worth exploring.
