  • Editorial Review:
Adam is not a typical romantic comedy. The death of his father leaves Adam (Hugh Dancy, Confessions of a Shopaholic) living alone in the apartment they shared. When a friendly young woman named Beth (Rose Byrne, Damages) moves into the building, Adam doesn't know how to express his attraction--he has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of high-functioning autism that prevents common human empathy. So he invites her into his apartment to experience his homemade planetarium and takes her to the park in the middle of the night to look at raccoons. Despite herself, Beth is intrigued. At first she's baffled by Adam, but when she learns the source of his awkwardness, she starts to appreciate Adam's honesty and lack of guile--particularly as family secrets start to emerge when her father (Peter Gallagher, The O.C.) is indicted for financial misdoings. Just as the nature of Asperger's Syndrome lifts Adam from the ranks of conventional romance, the committed and thoughtful performances by Dancy and Byrne keep Adam from being a disease-of-the-week movie or yet another ""mental handicap"" flick. The movie treats the problems of such a romance honestly, but also sees a kind of hope in the way these two grapple with their difficulties. Also featuring Amy Irving (Bossa Nova, Carrie). --Bret Fetzer

    Adam [Theatrical Release] Reviews:
    Superb 5 Star Review
2009-12-27 - "Adam" is one of the most poetic and real films I've seen lately. The ssperger syndrome has been covered quiet a bit in the media lately, and this film represents it well. I don't need a 3D film to feel included; this film got me just that and more. Thank you!

A SWEET FILM ABOUT A GENIUS WITH ASPERGER'S SYNDROME 3 Star Review
2009-12-23 - I hope ADAM does well when it is finally released on DVD. It has a nice low-keyed story to tell and does so in a touching and respectful way. Best of all, it does not paste on a phony "happily ever after" ending.

We get to see Adam (Hugh Dancy) and Beth (Rose Bryne) getting to know and care about each other--and even briefly becoming lovers and potential spouses.

Part of the film is devoted to educating viewers about Asperger's Syndrome, which is what Adam suffers from: among other things, he takes literally whatever others say and is usually unable to imagine correctly what emotions others are having, despite cues from their facial expressions and even their words.

Adam's genius abilities in astronomy and engineering are brought out well, and Adam will probably remind many viewers of the forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel), another genius with Asperger's, who is the central character in the acclaimed TV series BONES.

Part of the back-story involves Beth herself getting a reality check about her own father, which appropriately reminds us that even "normal" people frequently misinterpret or misjudge what is going on, even with their own family members.

In short, one of the greatest films ever made. 5 Star Review
2009-12-21 - A few years ago, a man named Max Mayer heard a radio interview with a man who had Asperger's Syndrome. Mayer tooks this interview and fashioned it into a film which he entitle "Adam", after the film's main character. When the film had it's premire at 2009s Sundance Film Festival, the film took audiences by storm, prompting 20th Century Fox Clasic, the same studio that in 2008, released the criticaly acclaimed films The Wrestler, which boosted Micky Rocrke back to superstar status (enough so that Jon Faverau approaced him to play the villian Whiplash in Iron Man 2. An offer that he accepted, then turned down, and then accepted it again) and Danny Boyle's award winning film, Slumdog Millionaire. When I saw Adam in laste August, I was blown away at the beleavibility of the film. Hugh Dancy stars as Adam, a man in his late twenties who has Asperger's Syndrome. Adam lives in New York City with his father. The film opens with a funerial. The man being burried: Adam's father. With this incident, Adam is thrust into the real world, something he has never fully grasped, and, felt that as long his father was around, he wouldn't have to. But, things change, and as Adam learns, sometimes, these changes are very, VERY good. Only a few weeks after the death of his father, he meets Beth, an aspiring young writer. Adam can't help but be actracted to Beth, but he doesn't know how to express this. But, Beth seems to be atracted to Adam almost as much as he is to her. Beth is played by Rose Byrne. Both Byrne and Dancy are PHENOMINAL. Mayer doesn't bend to cliches, that if this was a big Hollywood studio picture, this film would be full of. This little indipendant film seems almost like it is a documentary. This is a VERY good film that very few people saw, being a limited release, and being a truly heartfelt story that could actualy teach people something for this. I highy anticipate Mayer's next project, although, I know that NOTHING could be better than Adam.

"Adam".........Awaiting the DVD Release is Agonizing 4 Star Review
2009-11-16 - Unfortunately, this nice little movie came and went in a heartbeat. It opened at the Sundance Cinemas in San Francisco, and was gone within 2 weeks. I really enjoyed it and have been anticipating the announcement of the DVD release date. I somehow thought its theatrical run was a lot longer time ago, when it has only been 4 months. Still, considering how poorly it performed at the box office, I would have hoped that the DVD would be released before the holiday season. Will it?

Incredible look into the life and struggles of Asperger's 5 Star Review
2009-11-07 - I recently saw this on a plane flight and immediately wanted to go out and buy it. This was very truthfully detailed in showing the daily life accomplishments and struggles of someone with Asperger's. From the people who don't (and/or don't want to) understand Adam [Hugh Darcy] to others like his friend Harlan [Frankie Faison](Down to Earth, In Good Company) who explains some of life's simple situations to Adam one day then helps Adam keep self-control in an excited, emotional situation.

A very good movie and one to show others who may not normally be open to seminars/training about such conditions but could easily enjoy and understand this production. Two thumbs up and 5 stars!!!!
