Description of Other Ways of Speaking:
There's a temptation to judge 30 Odd Foot Grunts harshly, given that Russell Crowe's talent as a singer falls far short of his acumen as an actor. But that isn't entirely fair. Veering somewhere between David Bowie and Chris Isaak, Crowe's rough but nuanced voice provides a perfectly good vehicle for these vignettes of dashed love and struggle. Erring a bit on the wordy side, with choruses that ramble, the songs are rescued by solid and often adventurous musicianship. Often a nasty snarling guitar asserts its splendidly ugly head, reminding one of nothing so much as the menace of vintage ZZ Top. The oddly named ensemble is best served by more raucous numbers in which the players sound like early '80s pub rockers on a loon. Unselfconsciously retro, the band is full of attitude and sass, but that all dissipates on maudlin songs like the self-absorbed "Unfaithful Man" and the wooden and clichéd "Full Length of the River." Chrissie Hynde adds some class when she duets with Crowe on the conflicted love song, "Never Be Alone Again." --Jaan Uhelszki
Other Ways of Speaking Reviews:
I am rating this on Crowe's great voice...
2009-03-20 - Okay, I want to be clear.., have NOT YET HEARD THIS BUT am buying it, given having just discovered his music videos on THE GOOD YEAR cd. Who'd have thunk, his voice is this cool.
Since he is camera comfortable, and a great performer, (gladiator). That he looks great in front of an audience is a ++. One can clearly see he enjoys it.
On the final music video in GY called revival or something in the extras part. It shows a quick clip (geekier hair and rawer voice) at the beginning, just a few seconds, then switches to him doing this song at the House of Blues, just belting on it.. shows his practice... good progression and honing of voice..
So, based on these GY music videos, I am ordering this up, expecting to enjoy...would have liked If I could have listened to cuts like some others.....BUT CHECK OUT THE MUSIC VIDEOS ON THE GOOD YEAR CD, WITH THE LAST ONE BEING A BLOWOUT GOOD SONG..
Not as good as his acting
2008-02-17 - This hurts me to say it -- how can I put this? -- He is a much better actor than singer. The only song of his I like -and I love it- is "Weight of a Man," and that's not on this CD. The best part of this CD is the picture on the cover. (Ok, I can breathe again now.) I like the intensity of his persona, and his singing just doesn't match up.
The Amazing Russell Crowe
2007-09-06 - His acting is phenomenal.....who would have ever guessed an actor this talented was just as talented in music. I was introduced to Russell Crowe in A Good Year. I started reading about him and one thing lead to another to another and found out that he was in a band. An awesome band!! His voice is grand and it grabs you - you become addicted. The whole CD just rocks! You won't be let down!!
Other ways of speaking- Russell Crowe
2007-02-01 - I am very disappointed with this cd- i enjoy, Russell Crowe singing and acting. Why is it, that this is the first time,i have been disappointed in buying a cd from company. On the back of cd-there are listed 15 tunes- number 14- farm noises is not noted as being played- but, i neither hear tune 13 or 15.. One of all,i am interestedin hearing is FOLSOM PRISON BLUES. WHEN I PHONED AMAZON- THEY SAID- THAT THERE WAS NO FOLSOM PRISON BLUES- AS THE LAST TUNE- OR NOT INCLUDED AT ALL- THAT FARM NOISES IS THE LAS TUNE- NO SOUNDTRACK- WHY IS THIS CD- BEING MISREPRESENTED.
LIKE THE SMEAR OF RED LIPSTICK ON A HOBO
2006-06-07 - I'm not quite sure what the others are basing the positive reviews on... the lyrics are ill at ease and the vocals by Mr. Crow are underwhelming and actually a bit embarrassing for the listener.
Put some lipstick on ugly and its just painted ugly.
