Editorial Review:
The Many Faces of Sacha Baron Cohen explores the surprising political resonance of British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's portrayals of Borat, Ali G, and Bruno. The book examines the political underpinnings of Baron Cohen's humor, the cultural ramifications of his ethnically-charged satire, and the global implications of his various personae.
The Many Faces of Sacha Baron Cohen: Politics, Parody, and the Battle over Borat Reviews:
A Unique Perspective
2009-04-30 - The Many Faces of Sacha Baron Cohen is not only informative, it's downright interesting.
I have had the privilege of being one of Professor Saunders' students, and while there is a hint of his own personality within the writing you won't find this book biased. It was well researched and written by a man who knows the subject to an expert degree.
While other writings on Cohen and his confrontation with the nation of Kazakhstan will take a dry, authoritarian stance on the subject, Saunders does nothing of the kind. Instead of a humdrum treatise, Saunders presents the reader with a book that is nearly as compelling as a fine novel.
I had trouble putting the book down after I began reading it, and when I had finished I came away with an understanding that I might not have been able to acquire from other sources.
If you have an interest in Sacha Baron Cohen, this book is a must.
Awesome. Do not confuse it with other Borat/Sacha Baron Cohen books
2008-12-31 - Before anyone dismisses this book as a quick cash-in on Sacha Baron Cohen's fame, it's not. There's plenty of bland "Unauthorized" biographies on the man of Borat fame but this is not the case here at all. This a very well-written and astute novel about Borat and Kazakhstan's feud with the fictional character. A really great read for anyone a fan of Cohen's work or just the social ramifications of his satire. Robert Saunders is obviously an intelligent writer and well-established on the culture of America/Britain/Kazakhstan and the humor as well. Incredibly interesting read.
