Editorial Review:
A political aide hoping to garner votes for her senator travels to ireland looking for his genealogical roots and finds herself in the middle of a local matchmaking festival. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 01/06/2004 Starring: Janeane Garofalo Paul Hickey Run time: 97 minutes Rating: R Director: Mark Joffe
Description of The Matchmaker:
As she does in The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Janeane Garofalo proves she's a capable leading lady--beautiful, charming, self-effacing, and what used to be referred to as sharp as a tack. Garofalo plays Marcy, aide to dim Massachusetts senator McGlory (Jay O. Sanders). Denis Leary is appropriately slimy as a fellow aide. The senator and Nick dispatch Marcy to the remote (and fictitious) Irish town of Ballinagra, where she's supposed to unearth relatives to use in the senator's PR campaign. Along the way, Marcy not only encounters the eccentric locals, but finds herself in the maelstrom of the town's annual matchmaking festival. The single Marcy inadvertently catches the eye of the movie's eponymous matchmaker Dermot (a captivating Milo O'Shea). Dermot senses sparks between Marcy and the equally cynical, recently returned local boy, Sean (David O'Hara), once a successful journalist who's returned home to work on a book. The intimacies of the small town, the relationships between the locals, and the dialogue are credible and engaging. Look for beautiful cinematography and music, too. Also notable is the movie's ability to convey the feel of a foreign film while injecting humor that's both sarcastically American and yet Irish in trademark. --N.F. Mendoza
The Matchmaker Reviews:
BEAUTIFUL SCENERY
2009-09-12 - THIS IS A CUTE STORY WITH LOTS OF BEAUTIFUL SCENERY OF THE COUNTRY IN IT FUNNY IN PLACES TOO.
Sarcasm and romance.
2009-07-19 -
It is Janeane Garofalo's delightful sarcasm and grumpiness that attracts me to her movies. Paired with a little bit of (could there be? No? Maybe? Yes! No?) romance, This film lived right up to my expectations. Perfect film for the single and bitter, yet secretly hopeful viewer.
Good movie, poor quality DVD
2009-02-18 - I purchased this movie because I had seen it before and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the DVD was of very poor quality - the movie picture was "grainy" throughout the film and very noticeable in darker scenes. Also, there was no menu to the movie; instead of going to a menu page to select "Play Movie" or "Select a Scene", it started right away, which I thought was odd.
The Matchmaker
2008-12-30 - I love, love, love this movie. Couldn't find it anywhere in Australia, so happy I found it on Amazon.com!
Sweet and Endearing
2008-12-25 - My wife and I both love this movie. Janeane Garafolo is wonderful as an American sent over to Ireland by her senator boss to find his Irish relatives. She runs into trouble for two reasons: one, she cannot find any relatives; and two, it is during the annual matchmaking festival. The locals are lovable and the Irish countryside is beautiful. Many of the characters seems to be a little too extreme: the geek is a little too geeky, the angry man on the island is a little too angry, etc. As the movie goes on, you see a bit more into these characters as well as the main ones as well.
We try to catch it whenever it plays on TV and others times as well on DVD. It may not me Macbeth or Hamlet, but it makes us happy to watch it every time we see it.
