  • Editorial Review:
    Jurassic Park
Steven Spielberg's 1993 mega-hit rivals Jaws as the most intense and frightening film he'd ever made prior to Schindler's List, but it was also among his weakest stories. Based on Michael Crichton's novel about an island amusement park populated by cloned dinosaurs, the film works best as a thrill ride with none of the interesting human dynamics of Spielberg's Jaws. That lapse proves unfortunate, but there's no shortage of raw terror as a rampaging T. rex and nasty raptors try to make fast food out of the cast. The effects are still astonishing (despite the fact that the computer-generated technology has since been improved upon) and at times primeval, such as the sight of a herd of whatever-they-are scampering through a valley. --Tom Keogh

    The Lost World: Jurassic Park
After the global phenomenon that was Jurassic Park, it was a given that novelist Michael Crichton would conjure up a sequel and that Steven Spielberg would then commit it to film. Considering the potential profit involved, it was practically a commercial mandate. Perhaps it was inevitable that both efforts were contrived, and well below the talents of Crichton (well, maybe) and certainly Spielberg, who just didn't have the heart for this recycling after the artistic triumph of Schindler's List. What we're left with, for better and worse, is a redundant blockbuster that still benefits from Spielberg's mastery of high-intensity action sequences and the further development of amazing computer-generated special effects. What's missing is the awe and wonder that made Jurassic Park a technical marvel and a dazzling product of scientific imagination. The story's a no-brainer: after the deadly fiasco of the original dinosaur theme park, we're taken (along with returning star Jeff Goldblum) to a second island where genetically engineered dinosaurs still thrive under the watchful eye of Goldblum's biologist girlfriend (Julianne Moore). But a devious capitalist (Arliss Howard) is determined to export dinosaurs to a new park in San Diego, financing a hunt-and-capture expedition that results in another series of fatal disasters. In Spielberg's hands this movie's more exciting than it has a right to be, given the creative paucity of Crichton's novel and David Koepp's adapted screenplay. The special effects are state-of-the-art, and the T. rex's rampage through the streets of San Diego is nothing short of spectacular; but apparently an improvement upon the shortcomings of Jurassic Park was too much to hope for. --Jeff Shannon

Jurassic Park & Lost World Collection (2-Disc Set) - Full-Screen Reviews:
A Dino Double Feature 3 Star Review
2008-09-16 - The Jurassic Park Collection comprises of Steven Spielberg's first two Jurassic Park films, which are loosely adapted from the novels by Michael Crichton. Both films were revolutionary in their use of CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery), though they received a mix response by film critics. Their deviations from the books, their reliance on action rather than character, and their overly commercial nature turned some viewers off.

    Jurassic Park - 1993
In Jurassic Park, we watch in amazement as dinosaurs are brought to life on screen and for the first time we believe in their portrayal.
The story tells the tale of a group of scientists (a paleontologist, a paleobotanist, and a chaotician) who are invited to a remote island so that they can endorse a theme park that features live dinosaurs as its main attractions. Naturally the dinosaurs break loose and cause havoc.
Starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Ariana Richards, Joseph Mazzello, Bob Peck, Samuel L. Jackson, and Wayne Knight.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park - 1997
In The Lost World: Jurassic Park, the silly humans once again decide to open another park but first they have to catch the dinosaurs.
Ian Malcolm, the chaotician of the first film, leads an expedition to save his girlfriend who's documenting the dinosaurs in their natural environment. But when greedy capitalists attempt to capture the dinosaurs for a new park, he and the other members of his expedition must stop them.
Starring Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Vince Vaughn, Richard Attenborough, Pete Postlethwaite, and Arliss Howard.

The first film is certainly a classic adventure film but the sequel was sloppily written and directed. Still this set is a must-have for fans of Spielberg and for fans of science fiction/adventure films.

Disc 1 contains the original Jurassic Park film, along with these bonus materials: The making of Jurassic Park documentary, early pre-production meetings, animatics sequence, storyboards, dinosaur encyclopedia, production notes, cast and filmmakers' bios, and theatrical trailers for all three Jurassic Park films.

Disc 2 contains the sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park, along with these bonus materials: Making The Lost World documentary, two deleted scenes, illustrations and conceptual drawings, storyboards, The World of Jurassic Park, The Magic of ILM, dinosaur encyclopedia, production notes and photographs, cast and filmmakers' bios, and theatrical trailers.

A MUST HAVE FOR JOHN WILLIAMS FANS 5 Star Review
2008-09-15 - @@This is really something worth owning, there are 2 DVD films and 2 CDs soundtracks in the set, plus photos, frames from the movies and etc. For those who doesn't enjoy Jurassic Park III, it would be a great choice to own the Spielberg series. The bonus materials in the set is also rich, including almost anything you want.
@@For film score hunters, it would be a great oppotunity to own one of JOHN WILLIAMS' best score to Jurassic Park and its sequel. It is obviously that the Lost World soundtrack is out of print now, and would be blood sucking if you purchase it on Ebay. The soundtrack in this set has a special packaging. In my opinion, this one is better than the original album issue.
Get it while you can, and you won't regret it.
